How to address name calling by peers?

I heard first hand Trev being called names due to inappropriate social interactions. Heart breaking, but is there anything I can really do? His social deficits are becoming very noticeable.  He seems unaware his peers are making fun of him.

I know I can not protect him from everything, but it just breaks my heart.

    Here- have a tissue.

OMG does this hurt, hurt, hurt.

It's a double edged sword. On one hand you want your son to grow and become more aware of the content of the messages sent by peers, but on the other you want to keep them in protective ignorance.

    Can you tell I've BTDT?

This takes a proactive and two pronged approach.

First taks is to protect your son from statements meant to separated, diminish and humiliate him- this is bullying. Inform the school. If they balk, download their website's policy regarding this topic. In a post-Columbine world, all districts have a defacto "anti-bullying" or "respect diversity"- hold them to it. Your son being picked on is exactly the same as a child being put down because of their race or religion.

The other part is to use this event as proof that your son needs more effective social thinking instruction in order to succeed socially in the classroom. For me this is a MGW curriculum that empowers him to make behavioral choices to control or mitigate what others think about him and treat him as a result. You can use this incident to argie for additional services because going forward he needs to be able to work collaboratively in groups.

Our current district has stated that Trev is doing fine socially. I KNOW this is not the case and have documented the incident.  We are in the midst of a move to a better district with much better special education services. Social skill groups/skills are on the top of my list. It's just so hard to hear and can not be ignored. I want him to be able to "fight" back. I also heard the teacher tell the student it was ok to do this!

  • I just posted something similar.  I didn't intervene, either, but now I feel like I should have.
