"Ability to sit up and hold head up unassisted"

When figuring out solid food readiness...

Does this mean sit in a seat and hold head up?  Or actually sit independently?

Re: "Ability to sit up and hold head up unassisted"

  • I take it as in sit in a seat. Because most kids eat in highchairs, so they'd just need to be able to sit in that..right? Our highchair is attached to the table so its a little different/harder to sit in, so I just use a bumbo. But he COULD sit in a highchair and can obivously hold his head up, so he was 'ready'.

This is what I'm thinking.  They should call it "the ability to be bendy".

I'm thinking of doing avacados first.  But, I read that wholesome baby food blog and they say that first foods should be thin.  But they also say to just mash avacado and serve.  But, that'd be thick.

    What gives?

This is what I thought but Adeline is less than a week away from 6m and isn't even close.  But I don't think I'll delay solids past 7m.

  • I mixed the mashed avocado with 1/2 oz of formula and he loved it! Good luck :)
  • Does she tripod sit? I think that counts for food. The idea behind sitting is that you aren't laying them down to feed them.

Yeah, even if DS isn't sitting independently I am still planning on solids at 6m.

I can see how the guideline can be interpreted differently, the more I think about it.

  • I have no idea. I was thinking of this too. Does it mean they put themselves in a sit? Are they sitting unassisted for 20 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes? Is the wobble and the face plant okay?

I need a clearly explained operational definition here.

  • We put breast milk in her food. So far she's had avocado, carrots, sweet potato, green beans (not such a fan), and banana (her favorite so far).

We did green beans and peas first, but just tried avocado today. I don't think he 'needed' to have that thin consistancy first - he got it. I mixed it with a little water when I was making it, and that thinned it out a little bit, but it was still a little thick but he did fine. With A being older I'd assume she'd do fine with it!

Or bm, I found that when I didn't pur?e totally smooth, he choked a bit.

Pew are going to start with avacado. We plan to mash it up finely and mix it with breast milk so that it is a thick liquid. You can mix the avacado with formula. That way it won't be too thick.

This. We've been giving him oatmeal for about 2 weeks to "practice" eating and he does great with it so I'm not worried.

So, not really "this" since you started at four months.  Stick out tongue

lol yeah, my thought exactly. I tried giving her oatmeal and she still had the tongue thrust reflex going on, so we'll wait a little longer. I interpreted sitting to be able to sit a little independently.

  • Technically it's be able to sit unassisted since the developmental milestone shows readiness for food.  It shows something is developed that needs to be there to do foods.  If you're doing purees you probably don't need to worry as much as if you're doing BLW.  We gave avocado cut into strips for DD1 as one of her first foods and she handled it well.  We did BLW and she did gag on food at first just because she needed to learn how to handle it.  At that age the gagging mechanism is at the very front of the tongue to prevent them from choking so they'll gag way before there is ever an issue.  Sweet potatoes cut into fry shapes are also excellent for a good first whole food.

  • I am reading the BLW book so hopefully I will have a lot more information soon. However as of now I'm thinking I will probably go with 6 months even if she isn't fully sitting unassisted yet.

I may even start giving her things sooner than 6 months if I feel she is ready.

So far I've given her a carrot but after she licked it once I snatched it away as I was scared she'd suck it in and choke. Again, hoping when I'm done with the book (i just started it) that I will know more about the whole feeding babies thingy. lol

  • S can sit in her highchair and sit up pretty well if someone is holding her hands. I was planning on waiting till 6 months to start, but after she stole my yogurt spoon and put it in her mouth, I decided to give it a try.

She was not terribly impressed with rice cereal.

  • Where we do BLW I like them to be able to sit pretty stable on their own. Our high chair reclines a bit for younger babies, but I think I remember reading there's higher chance of actual choking with whole foods and eating reclined even a little.

kellymom says can sit up well without support.

Didn't mean to confuse everyone! Haha I don't consider oatmeal to be solids. When I hear "solids" I think of actual purees like sweet potato, avocado, green beans, etc.

Me too. That's why I keep thinking people must be high on the 3-6M board. "My baby is 4 months tomorrow! Time to break out the rice cereal!"

I'd say sit well in a high chair, not tipping over etc.

Add formula or BM to the avocado, it was Lucy's first food and will be Hannah's as well

yeah, I don't quite get why everyone wants to start so early.

We didn't even do cereal until I needed it to add to some of the purees
