Babies: 9 - 12 Months

ankles turned inward

Hi everyone! My son is 13 months and he has been walking for a while and he does great but his ankles are so turned in. Is this normal? He isnt in pain and has no trouble walking or climbing so I just wondered if this is going to straighten itself out as he grows or what. I got him the high ankle baby shoes to see if that would start helping and he cant walk in them so I went back to regular ones. He has blisters on the inside on his feet on the side of his arch from where he walks with his feet so turned in. What do you think?

Re: ankles turned inward

  • I think it's pretty normal for new walkers to point their toes in and they grow out of it. You could call your pedi and leave a message to see if they are concerned and worth seeing.

  • I think you are saying that he is almost walking on the inside of his ankles, not that his toes are turned in, right?  If so, my oldest had this issue too.  We saw three specialists: the podiatrist her in casts (which lasted one day), and the most experienced pediatric orthopeodic specialist at Nemours said that she will grow out of it, which she did.  Her arch was fine if she was not weight-bearing but when she was standing or walking her ankles would roll inward.  There are other issues that it could be, so I would bring it up to your pedi.
