April 2012 Moms

Come in if you're not starting solids yet..

Is LO reaching for your food and looking very interested?  Mine is.  I'm too lazy to start solids just yet, I was planning to wait until 6 mos.  I'm starting to feel a tiny bit bad for him lately, poor thing is so interested in what I'm eating and constantly smacks his chops, drools, and lunges for it.

If you're not starting just yet, and LO is showing interest, do you just avoid eating around LO? or let them pine for your food regardless?

  • Pine away! She's grabbed for my food several times but she grabs anything and everything. While she isn't drooling or smacking her lips, she watches very carefully. I guess she's somewhat interested but she's going to have to wait!

  • DD will stop whatever she is doing and just stare, smile and even go "aaahhhh" when we are eating. She gets so excited. We are still waiting until 6 months though she will have to withhold her excitement for a little longer.

  • Haha.  I'm getting all these visuals of babies staring and watching VERY carefully.  We will wait, and my Mum keeps bugging me about it.  "Oh he's so hungry! why aren't you FEEDING him?!"  Um, I am feeding him.  He gets milk.

  • S sits at the table with us and stares at our food. I will continue to let him do that for a few more weeks. I really believe there is more to just intetest to them being ready. I want his little tummy to be fully ready too.

  • Ari has just recently started starring at us when we are eating so I think he is getting ready. I think we will start at 5 months.

  • Eh, he tries to grab anything I have and put it in his mouth. I don't feel bad since he doesn't know the difference between food and whatever else he decides to chew on. He still doesn't sit stable enough for me to be comfortable with BLW at this point.

All this. I'll start in a month.

  • We are waiting, and will probably wait until 6 months. J isn't showing any interest, although last night he flung some rice off my plate and onto the floor. Our dog already knows where to sit for the best food.

  • M does look at our food with a wide mouth and sort of lean in towards it. I gave her a steamed baby carrot to see what she'd do and she put it to her mouth and licked it. Then I took it away.

I really am not sure she knows it is food yet. She pretty much puts everything in her mouth. And she drools a lot whether or not she is in the presence of food.

I have 6 months in my mind but I'm not dead set on it. I'm not planning to spoon feed cereals or purees but if before 6 months she is sitting well and seems more "ready" to me, then maybe I'll give her a few lumps of something to gnaw on.

  • I don't really buy into the "reaching for food" thing.  Adeline reaches for food.  She also reaches for cell phones and dog butts.

  • DS reaches for everything and is starting to watch our food very closely, but is not quite there yet. We are doing BLW, so I am waiting for him to get to around 6 mo and sit up better.

Haha! Fwiw, my pedi said that ready is not about reaching for food. It is about desire and tongue thrust. She suggested trying once a week on he hit 16 lbs. and was able to sit for a few seconds. If he was interested, great feed if you want. If he wasn't, try again in a week or two. He wasn't ready at first, but he devoured it this week. We are 5 months and ready, but we won't be doing food every night.

This makes more sense, so thanks for pointing that out Smile

So it's not "interest in food", but "the ability to put their own food in their own mouth".

This makes so much more sense.

  • I let her pine.  I really think that she just wants everything and it's not necessarily food related.  Like, if I put anything in my mouth she is going to want to put it in her mouth as well.

This is good advice. Thanks for sharing.  I was planning on waiting until 6 months...DD isnt reaching or even opening her mouth most the time if we fake put food up to it.  She does smack some though.  But she isnt quite 14.5 lbs nor can she sit. I may shoot for that as opposed to 6 months now.

I really like my pedi. Her advice normally makes sense. I don't know if weight is different for girls.
  • Pilar smacks her lips at us when she's eating.  I have given her tastes of things, but not a lot.  For the most part I'm wait until she's 6 months.  I have bad alleries so although not food allergies.  I really don't want her to get them.  The APA suggests waiting for 6 months.

  • We're not starting yet either and like your LO, DD is constantly trying to get at our food and drinks. She is mesmerized watching us eat and you can see the wheels turning, trying to figure it all out.
I want to wait until after her 6 month appointment, but I also have to prepare more until we start. Finish reading my BLW book, get a high chair, prepare myself for the crazy poop etcetc.

  • With the MSPI issues, my ped said we'd talk about it at her 6 month. We need to figure this out first. She does reach for stuff but I don't think she'd know what to do with it if she got it.

  • I have no idea what I will do when he starts solids.  He has set his own bedtime to be between 6:30 and 7:30pm, and we often don't get dinner made until after he goes down.  As it is, I get home between 5:30 and 6pm, so I can't do dinner earlier, and the other kiddo goes down around 8pm, and we try to eat with him at least.  I'm starting to think I will not get to feed myself until after both kids are in bed!  So, as for him being interested in food, he never sees me eat except on the weekend!  I even eat breakfast before they get up, as John eats at DC, and if he sees me eating, he wants breakfast too, which takes him forever to eat.  What the heck am I going to do when Michael starts solids too?!?
