XP: Cow's milk allergy

If your LO has a cow's milk protein allergy, what type of milk are you moving him/her to? K and I are still breastfeeding mornings/nights but I stopped pumping and will soon be out of a freezer stash for daycare. At her one year, our pedi recommended moving her to formula Nutramigen since she couldn't have whole milk. I told the pedi that I'd prefer to move her to hemp milk and feed her soy and coconut milk yogurt for added protein and fat. The pedi didn't really like that idea. I'd prefer not to give her formula. What are other mom's doing?

At her one year she was 20 lbs 8 oz 50th and 30 in 75th.

  • Our pedi said the same thing - try Alimentum or Nutramigen.  My son wouldn't touch the Alimentum (and he'd been milk-based formula fed for about 5 months prior).  I can imagine a totally BF'd baby probably wouldn't go for that stuff, either.

We saw a pediatric gastroenterologist who suggested rice, almond, coconut and oat milk.  We chose oat milk because it had levels of vitamin D and calcium that were similar to cow's milk and at least some protein (4 grams per 8oz).  I would have preferred he get some of the fat from the coconut milk, but he reacted negatively to it.  We make sure to cook his food in olive oil and add good fats whenever possible. The peds GI did not seem concerned with the drop in fat intake.

My son has done tremendously well on oat milk.  He has grown a whole bunch since we took milk and soy out of his diet.  At one year he was approximately 23lbs and 29in and at 15 months he was 26lbs and 31.5in.

Good luck!  Oh, and if you go with one of the shelf-stable milks (like hemp or oat) make sure to buy it off of Amazon.  It is WAY cheaper and you can buy in bulk - it's even less expensive if you have a Prime or Amazon Moms membership.

  • We do a combination of almond, coconut milks and breast milk. Also some soy products. I wrote about it here: https://thekavanaughreport.blogspot.com/2012/08/moving-on.html

  • We give DS coconut milk bc of the high fat content. The brand we buy, Silk, is calcium enriched so we don't have to worry about that. He takes a vitamin drop in the morning, and I make sure he gets three things of protein per day. We plan to switch to almond milk at 2 years when other kiddos are switching from whole milk to 2.

  • Have you tried cow's milk yet?

I am still BFing my LO.  When she was 4 months, we realized she had a milk protein allergy and I stopped eating/drinking all forms of dairy and soy.  At 6 months, I had a piece of cheese and she reacted.  Same at 9 months.  At 11.5 months, gave her some cow's milk.  She did great.  She loves her milk and has had no more issues.

Just wondering if your LO could have outgrown it.

I can't peak for the OP, but I know we try every 3 months. Every single time, DS gets horrible cramps, gas and blood in his stool. At this point, I'm not super optimistic that he's going to outgrow before 2.
