So I'm a clueless FTM who has received a ton of blankets, some muslin, some thin cotton, some thick knitted blankets. I had thought that baby was supposed to sleep on a fitted sheet with no blankets on top of her, other than maybe something for her to be swaddled in?
So... what do you use a baby blanket for??
Re: Dumb FTM question - baby blankets?
-to put on the floor for tummy time
-to cover them up in a chilly room while nursing or feeding
-to cover the couch or anywhere you put them down in case they pee or poop through clothes
-as a burp cloth/vom catcher
-to put over their carseat on a chilly day
-to use later when they are a big boy and like to cuddle a blanket to their face while they sleep (ok, maybe that's just my son!)
Yeah, all of the things PP said. We had about 20 receiving blankets given to us as gifts. We ended up using them as burp cloths and stuff. But other than that, yeah, you're supposed to keep a newborn either swaddled, in a swaddle-me, or a wearable blanket. But there are a bunch of uses for them.
You can also make your own cloth wipes from receiving blankets if you have a billion like us!

I used them for swaddling, for tummy time and other floor time, sometimes to drape while nursing, for adding extra warmth to the stroller or carseat in the winter, or to use as an extra sunshade for daytime naps. Later when LO is older you'll end up sending them to preschool and other places for naptime or just as a lovey.
You probably won't end up using all of those blankets your receive as gifts, but when you figure out which ones you love, you'll end up finding a million uses.
I've given my girls blankets as long as they are less than a quarter inch thick. The baby usually stays swaddled for about the first month and then after that they'll kick out of the swaddling after a few minutes unless they're already asleep when you lay them down. Once they reach this point, we stopped swaddling and just put the baby blanket on them.
However, at daycare, they won't give the baby a blanket, so if you want them to be have any covers, you have to take in a sleep sack.
