Do you use baby toothpaste?

Or do you just brush with water? I haven't been regularly brushing since there were only two tiny teeth, but with the third poking through, I want to make this part of our regular routine. My question is do we use the toothpaste that came with the finger brush?

  • I don't use tooth paste yet...and owen has 12 teeth!  I will be asking the dr about it @ his appointment this week.

  • I do, but just a little bit, maybe half of a pea size?

  • Q only has three teeth but my pedi told me to wipe his teeth with a washcloth after meals when i wash his face. We've made a routine of it and it's the only time he lets me in his mouth. I am not looking forward to when we have to brush.

  • Yes. I bought the finger brush the comes along with the little tooth paste. She loves brushing her teeth!

  • Yep, I use the little finger brush with a bit of toothpaste on it. Jack LOVES it when I brush his teeth, the second he sees that brush he opens wide! I think it feels good on his gums. If he falls asleep nursing, though, I just run a rag over his teeth so I don't wake him up.

  • Em only has 1 tooth but she does have a second poking through. I was wondering about when to start brushing her teeth, but I guess the answer is now lol. Does anyone recommend their finger toothbrush so I know what to buy?

  • Yup, we use baby toothpaste, and Tatum is already on her second toothbrush.  I may have let her chew on her old one a little too often.  Embarrassed

As long as it's fluoride free toothpaste until they're old enough to know to spit it out and not eat it, it's fine.  I wonder why they make fruity delicious tasting toothpaste when kids are supposed to be spitting it out, though.

  • Not every time .. I use the toothpaste once a day and just water the others

  • My FIL is a dentist and he recommended just wiping the teeth own with a wet washcloth, which we do in the bath. She only barely has four teeth, though. I'll add this to the list of questions to ask the pedi at our upcoming appointment.
  • We started with toothpaste when the first teeth popped through for both girls. We usually get the Aquafresh toddler toothpaste, but have used Oral B's toddler toothpaste, too. I've never had a finger brush for them, just a regular tiny toothbrush :)

  • He loves getting his teeth / gums brushed! He only has 4, and I don't remember to do it all the time - oops. We have the fluoride free baby orajel one I think (has Elmo on the tube) and only use a teeny amount

  • Right now I just use the finger toothbrush with water.

I need to start doing it more regularly though, and I guess since she is one I should start using toothpaste.  We don't have fluoridated water here, so the recommendations here are to move to a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste around one.

  • My pedi actually told me to use regular toothpaste (i.e. what you would use) on DS' teeth.  With such a small amount, it won't hurt them.  Can't tell you how it's gone though... we've been really bad about the whole brushing thing.  Embarrassed

  • DS loves the little finger brush that comes with the baby orajel toothpaste... he chomps down on it every time... maybe he's cutting tooth #9
  • We just use water for now. She LOVES her toothbrush, it's the only way we can get her diaper on after her bath.
