Cloth Diapering

Disappointed (re:cding a newborn)

My little girl is here. She is one week old today. I have been using disposables but wanted to try my cloth today. I don't like it :( She leaked through her lil joey and saturated my bed. Then I tried a KL0 on her and hated the bulk (this was without a cover). I haven't done a pre fold yet. I thought I would love it more. I don't! I CD my son and have so since he was 6 months old. I have such a large newborn stash and was so excited to dive in. I can't believe I don't like it. Maybe it's because I have too much going on. I have a toddler and I am recovering from a c/section as well. I really hope I try it again and like it :(. Any words of wisdom?

  • Sorry the first day didn't go so hot. CDing is trial and error at first, trying to find out what works/doesn't work.

If I were you I'd try a prefold to see how it works for you. If it doesn't work, take some time out, use disposables for a week. Maybe your DD is just too small still to fit in them (even though it sounds like you are using NBs).

  • Definitely give yourself some time if you need to. I intended to start CD as soon as we got home but it took me a while because I already felt stretched to the max with no help aside form DH, who needed to go to work right away since we can't afford for him to take off, and I was in a lot of pain and not able to walk around too well (vaginal birth with two 2nd degree tears--all things considered though, I should have had MUCH more damage with only 30 minutes of pushing and DD coming out with her hand by her head). I wanted to ease into everything and I felt that I'd be overcommitting myself if I started cloth immediately and took on the laundry and organization (we use a portable washer and air dry).

Then once we started, we soon after ended up in the hospital for a few days with LO, and in disposables that they provided. They needed to weigh her diapers and offered to adjust to our cloth, but we had enough to worry about other than diaper laundry; I didn't leave the hospital from Sunday afternoon through Wednesday evening.

Today we were out and about and DD seemed to pee and poop within 5 minutes of each diaper change, so every prefold we brought was used, and the covers we had were pooped on. We used a backup disposable that we had, and we also picked up a pack of Target diapers to use for backup purposes. I'm not morally opposed to disposables but I don't want them on her skin if I can avoid it, and I don't want the recurring cost. But if I looked at CD as an all or nothing thing THIS early in the game, I would resent it. Personally we are loving the prefolds so far, but if we have to throw a disposable on her butt for one diaper change, it's definitely not the end of the world. I am sure that will become less and less as time goes on.

  • don't give up,take step by step, first you need to recovery and get well in order to be able of taking care of your baby, not because the first couples time didn't work it doesn't mean it won't work next time.just think of getting well before anything else.good luck and again take care.

  • We had Imagine Smartfit prefolds from Nicki's diapers and just trifolded them the short way in the covers. Super-easy. Yeah, we changed covers 2-3 times a day but covers are pretty cheap. I had a planned c-section and was super worried about recovery so I also bought some KL0s and Grovia NB AIOs but everyone (GM & GP, DH & me) preferred the trifolded prefolds. I basically saved the AIOs for outings because the patterns were so cute. Once LO got a bit bigger, we switched to actually snappi'ing the prefolds because she poos less but more explosively, and never ended up using the pockets we have. I love my prefolds!

If you do go the prefold route, a trick someone taught me was to not tuck the prefold under the flap (if the cover has flaps) because it's less likely to soil the cover that way.

As it is, do what you have to do to stay sane. Disposables for a month isn't the end of the world if that's what works for you.

  • I waited until her stump fell off at 2.5 weeks to start my cloth. I used imagine prefolds, angel wing fold with a snappi and Thirsties covers. She was about 9lbs at that point and it went well. I would have been stressed out recovering from a section and trying to CD. We still use prefolds, bamboo Imagines now, and love them

  • Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I am going to try the pre fold trifolded when I change her diaper next time. I have been using the cloth wipes and LOVING them so I am hoping I will fall in love with the newborn cds.

I delivered at a hospital where I used to work so the nurses gave me so many disposables. I think thats part of my issue. I have all these "free" diapers laying around which is making my life easier. But, that baby powder smell in those Pampers is driving me insane.

  • Mama plz remember you just had major surgery. I had a cc too and was a wreck for weeks. And thise good old pp emotions and hormones will make ya crazy. Slow done, breathe, relax and use sposies for a few days. nbd. Then get yourself excited about cding again. Rememberyour not you right nowand im sure you are getting zero sleep. hugz
  • I'm with everyone else here - a few disposables here and there doesn't mean you can't still CD. I think the key is to be kind and patient with yourself - :)  the routine will come with time.
  • Definitely cut yourself some slack and do what works.

But also remember that generally babies don't care if a diaper is "bulky". It's mostly a fashion issue. If it works, it's fine.
