Lost a kid at the store for the 1st time today! I felt TERRIBLE. Luckily, it really wasn't bad, and I had her back just when I was about to cross over into panic, but still. Yikes. I had DS fussing in the cart and we had to do an exchange. DD was playing happily in the toys (at Kohl's--small area) with hardly anyone around. Toys are RIGHT around the bend from customer service. She was fussing about not wanting to leave so I said she could stay and play but had to stay RIGHT THERE in that aisle. My huge mistake--I should never have left her in the first place, even if it was right around the corner and looking totally safe, AND, I found out she's not old enough to "stay right there." So that's my PSA. Don't think you can try it with your pre-schooler!
We finished our returns in just a few minutes and DD was GONE. I checked the next 2 toy aisles and was just starting to panic when a saleslady heard me calling DD's name and asked if I was Nicole. DD was with another sales lady. She must have JUST left the toy area and hadn't gotten far, but I felt AWFUL. She went to go find me b/c she wanted to show us a stuffed animal. At least it was a very good lesson learned with a happy outcome.
Re: Bad Mom Moment--and PSA (not sad)
I am glad it all worked out!
DH and I lost DS in the food store one night. I thought he had him and he thought I had him......
We were really lucky that a store employee found him and DS knew my first name that they used on the overhead. We found him at customer service. It was really busy and he could have easily been taken or walked out of the store on his own. It was REALLY scary. Lesson learned.
DD walks away from me all the time! And terrifies me...
She loves the toy section at Kohls too
I was thinking this same thing - as a parent, if I saw a child by themselves in the store, I would have gotten a store employee and asked for help for the child. My older DD is 6 and I still would not let her be out of my sight like that - I trust her, I know she would stay put but I don't trust other people. We talk to my kids a lot about stranger danger and all of that but in a store with a lot of people walking around - that would make me way to nervous.
Live and learn and I am glad that she is fine and nothing happened.
