Side effects after stopping benadryl?

Ds was on benadry round the clock and a daily dose of claritin for about 3 days from a horrible rash and reaction to amoxicillin. The rash was much better yesterday so we stopped the benadryl, and last night (and again tonight) he's a different kid. He will not sleep or stop crying when we put him down in his crib at all. Also, before bed, he seemed to be in physical pain, possibly GI related, as he would just start crying and screaming in certain positions. I am at a total loss and have no idea what to do, and am wondering if it's related to the benadryl, like if there are withdrawal symptoms. I put in a call for the after hours advice nurse, but no word back yet, plus I doubt they'll be that helpful (rarely are). I just have no idea what to do short of holding him all night... Anyone have any advice or thoughts?

Re: Side effects after stopping benadryl?

  • hmm I as an adult take benadryl a lot and never had a withdrawal reaction, but benadryl is a strange thing.  Some people have strange reactions to it.

My daughter took it and acted so strange I only will give it to her for reason of a bad reaction, however, but that was while taking it not getting off of it.

UGH poor guy and poor mommy.  Is it possible that he is still have stomach pain due to the reaction from the amoxicillan?  I get terrible stomach pain from antibiotics even a few days off of them.

Just some thoughts.  I wish I could help you more!

  • I can only share my personal experience.  I took benedryl for a week after an allergic reaction.  When I stopped, I had a terrible time falling asleep. I had insomnia for quick a few nights.

I hope your LO gets better soon.
