We live in MN where winters can get brutal, & I know you are not supposed to use one of those thick prams in the car seats. What are you all doing for a jacket? I was looking at the Columbia Steens? Hoodie, where it says it is warm, but doesn't really say anything about temperatures it is rated for. Columbia is supposed to be pretty warm though. The "puffer" jackets I see seem like they would be just as bad as a snow suit in a car seat. Also looked at the 3-in-1 jackets at The Children's Place website. What are your gal's thoughts?
Re: To the mommies in the cold upper midwest... (or Canada) :-)
We live in Scotland and take DD hiking outdoors with us a lot. I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but we have the infant Denali jacket. We have not needed it here yet, but if its anything like my fleeces, this should be great. Its thin, but made very well. The only downside is it's pricey. Because we plan on using it often, I thought the price was worth it. They also have other jackets/snowsuit type outfits that might work for you.

We will do the same as last winter. Regular clothes in car seat and a snowsuit with us for emergencies and errands.
This is the one we're getting https://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/MemberPicks/Snowsports/PRD~5025-849/mec-toaster-bunting-suit-infants.jsp
But it is only available in Canada.
we're in Sartell.... about an hour north of the cities.... just north of St Cloud.

Thanks! How cold does it get in Scotland? Our winters can have temps & windchills down to -40 degrees F sometimes. We have The North Face at a local store here too. You are right - they are pricey.. but I think I've heard they are supposed to be warm too. I think they are comparable to Columbia brand too.

A review ontheir website said the jacket fall apart at the seams when she tried to wash it. Have you had any issues with that? She returned it thinking she just got a dud one, but when she went to wash the new one, it also fell apart.

Welcome
We live along the North Sea, so our temperatures do not get quite that cold, but it gets rather damp and windy. The Fleeces do a good job keeping the dampness and cold out. DH and I justified spending a bit for DD's fleece jacket because we would use it all the time, and their jackets hold up. (We got a neutral color since we plan on having more kids and will just pass it down)

We didn't have any problems with it. In fact DS is wearing it again this winter. However we didn't wash the top part that many times as he only used it a few times. We used the fleece part the most. I also do gentle cycle or handwash cycle when I was my kids clothes.
