What's the teacher: student ratio at your preschool?

Just curious what's typical for the different ages.

Last year my boys were in a 2's class the second half of the year and it was 2 teachers to 12 students. This year, same preschool, it's 2 teachers to 24 students. I knew the 3's class was a lot bigger (last year it was 22 students with the same 2 teachers) but apparently some of the other parents were concerned about it so that made me wonder if that's not typical for a 3's class.

  • 14 kids and 2 teachers. The most they will take is 15 kids.
  • Montessori so it is ages 35 starting the year. It is 24 kids this year and 1 teacher and 1 assistant teacher the assistant has been there for years and could teach the class if needed. 2 to 24 would seem like a lot if it was only 3 year olds. Honestly if ours was not Montessori I would never consider a class with 24 kids.

  • DS is in a Montessori preschool. His class last year was 20 students aged 2 to 4, with three teachers and sometimes an extra floating teacher.

This year, DS is in the 35 year old class with about 15 or 16 kids and two teachers, plus an occasional floating assistant.

  • We just moved, but last yr in our old state the law was a teacher for every 8 kids. My oldest had 14 kids and two teachers at a church preschool, my middle son at public preschool had 22 kids and 6 teachers. This yr there are 15 kids and 3 teachers.

  • 11 kids 4 adults...1 teacher, 1 aid, 1 special ed teacher, 1 special ed aid.

They can have as many as 18 kids. 4 kids have iep's.

  • Last year DD was in Montessori & it was 14 kids, 1 teacher and 1 assistant.  This year she's in a church pre-school it's the same 14 kids, 1 teacher and 1 assistant.  24 3 year olds and 2 teachers seem overwhelming!

  • Max of 8:1.

DD1 is in a class with two teachers and a max of 16 kids. I think they only get up to 16 on Tues/Thursday, and most days it's 14.

  • For the 2 year olds, it's 12:2. For the 3 year olds it's 14:2

  • Thanks for the responses. I was thinking 1:8 or 1:10 seemed reasonable for this age but I wasn't sure. Hopefully they will end up getting an aide. One of my boys has an IEP through the school system but he receives itinerant services in our home one day a week (and this is a private preschool). I'm hoping that this year he won't need much extra help in preschool (he's come a long way over the past year) but we'll see how it goes.

  • DD's 4yr old class has 2 teachers and 9 students right now. They will take up to 14 with 2 teachers.

DS's pre-k class last year was 3 teacher for 21 students.

I taught pre-k for a couple years and the ratios where I worked were ridiculous. The 3s class was 1:13 or 2:22 and the 4s class was 1:15 or 2:26.

  • It took me a while, but I finally found the state ratio info here. Looks like it's 13:1 for 3-year-olds, so it's legal here, but yeah, it does seem high. They said they'd bring in an aide if need be and I'm really hoping that they do.

  • The state mandated ratios are one teacher to 10 kids (three year olds), but her school operates at one teacher to 7 kids. It's not a small school either.

  • DD's (4 year) class is allowed 15:2...They have 5:2 this year!!!  I nearly fell off my seat when the teacher told us at our Parent Teacher meeting - her class last year was full!  She better learn a ton this year.  LOL

  • I am pretty sure that where I live the ratio is 10 students per teacher.  At the daycare preschool where my kids used to go they have 2 teachers in the 3's and 4's classes with 20 students.  At the PreK program (based at the elementary for kids that have turned 4 as of Sept 1st and will start kindergarten the following year), my DD has 20 kids in her class with 2 full time teachers (one for the morning hours and one for the afternoon hours) and a teachers aid.  Typically they have 2 staff members in the room between 8am and 5pm although over lunch time all 3 are in the room.  The way they work the schedule is that the morning teacher gets there at 6:45 when the program starts (program includes before and after care hours and is a full day, 5 day a week program).  The aid arrives at 8am and stays until 10 and then leaves until around noon and then stays until around 5or so depending on the number of kids that are there after school).  The afternoon teacher arrives at 10 and stays until 6pm when the program ends.  The morning teacher is there from 6:45 until 2:45.  They build office hours into the 2 teachers days so they can call parents and do any other classroom work that is needed.  The kids rest after lunch for 1 1/2 hours as well.

  • Last year my girls were in the 3 year old room and they were 12 kids to 2 teachers.

This year they are Pre-K and they are 18 kids to 2 teachers. They were allowed to go up to 22 kids to 2 teachers, but the school decided to keep the classes at max of 18 so the kids could have more teacher time. But they are a non-profit church based preschool.

  • 13 kids - 1 teacher, 1 aide (one of the reasons we chose this preschool was the smaller ratio)

the max in my state is 20 to 1 teacher, 1 aide...
