are 2 string cheeses/day too much?

my 13m old isn't very fond of meat or beans.  She eats a scrambled egg every morning too.  Lunch is cheese and often dinner too since she usually rejects the meat of the day.

  • Has your pedi given you the okay for peanut butter? Ours said anytime after a year is fine to introduce (if no history of nut allergy in parents) and so long as it's the creamy kind.

Also, greek yogurt (I mix 1/2 plain greek yogurt with unsweetened applesauce) is a good way to get extra protein.

  • Cheese doesn't replace the nutrients of meat or beans...

I don't necessarily think two a day is too many (LO went through a period where he ate two for lunch) but I'm hoping that your LO is also eating fruits and vegetables and breads at these meals?

Lots of people don't eat meat and survive. Like PP said, try PB or Greek Yogurt. Also, quinoa has a lot of protein. Have you tried baked beans? I know they have a lot of sugar, but beans are beans.

  • 2 cheeses a day is fine...but for other protein options go for lentils, beans, greek yogurt (with honey or applesauce), how about fish? My LO LOVED (and still loves) fish - look at some hake, tilapia or cod steaks

  • She eats sweet potatoes, apple sauce, peas, lentils, plums, zucchini, bread, waffles and sometimes pasta.  I can get out the baby bullet and mush up the meat and hide it with a veg.  I don't know what i'm gonna do when plums go out of season.  I think my doc. said to wait until 2 for peanut butter or shellfish, however, we don't have any allergies to either, so I might try PB early.  Baked beans sound like a good idea, even though the canned variety has a lot of sugar.  thanks all!

  • You've gotten good advice already.  I just wanted to add that things change.  DS refused all meat and beans at a year.  I actually told the doctor about it at his 1 year appointment and asked for suggestions as pretty much the only protein source he wouldn't refuse was dairy. I offered him meats at least one to two times a day, but he refused to eat it, even if I put some in his mouth.  Later that day he started eating meat.  It was like he flipped a switch.  Now he'll gladly eat meat and even beans.  So, give it a bit of time, offer it regularly and it'll change.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions.  I will keep trying with meat and beans.  I'd like for her to have protein from other sources than dairy.

  • I'm going to guess you've already tried these things but just in case - have you tried offering a preparation other than what you normally eat?  For example, my son likes moister chicken so he'll eat thighs or rotisserie chicken but not any form of baked chicken breast.  He also likes things flavored differently than I do and I had to take a step back and realize that I can't make him like the same food I like. Also, if you're not opposed, offer some kind of "dip" with everything.  My son will eat a lot more of anything if there's ketchup, ranch or BBQ sauce being offered.  Oh yeah, try quesadillas.  Tell her it's a cheese quesadilla and put some finely shredded beef or chicken in there.

  • My child won't eat much meat at all either, but I made this cheesy turkey meatloaf one day and he ate it up!  Now, it's a staple in our house because he'll eat it.  He likes fish too most of the time.

For a healthier option beside baked beans which are a double no-no since you should limit canned foods as well as sugar, black beans are a cheap, easy option. You can mix them with rice (if your kid is a pasta lover, she might like it) and then season them yourself. My kids never turn down black beans even in the pickiest of stages and they're full of protein.

  • Tofu is a great source of protein too!

  • I would make the beans myself in the crock pot.  I've always been concerned about canned foods.  I'll try baked beans, quesadillas and the turkey meatloaf.

I'd be thrilled if my LO ate all of those things!! She is a strict grilled cheese, mac n' cheese, fruit, bread, and yogurt girl. I have gotten her to eat a tiny bit of peanut butter on cinnamon bread but I mean TINY smear. My dr said wait until 2, but we had no history and I was kind of desperate to get her to eat anything non-dairy so I tried and she was OK.

  • I think it is too much but then again we lean toward vegan and think cheese is pretty bad for us. But that goes against most thinking.
