First pregnancy, starting exercise advice?

Hello!

I recently found out that I am pregnant and would like to begin an exercise routine. I used to be in great shape, then over the summer months really laid off and gained some weight. I read that its good to be in a routine, but everything I enjoy seemed to be "yellow flagged".

 What are your suggestions?

  • I wouldn't jump into too much since you're not already into a routine.  Rule of thumb is to not usually start anything new when you're pregnant but I think you'd be fine doing some low impact workouts like walking or water aerobics.  Listen to your body and don't overdo it.  Good for you to want to be active during the pregnancy!

  • Since you were active before, it's a good idea to modify those workouts and continue to be active at that level if you're feeling up to it.  The idea that you shouldn't jump into anything new just because you're pregnant leads many women to do TOO LITTLE during pregnancy, which is much more dangerous than maintaining healthy fitness.

What were you doing that was "yellow flagged?"  You can certainly start with prenatal yoga, walking/jogging, water aerobics/swimming, but if you were lifting weights or doing other classes, most of those are great things to continue, with a few modifications.
