Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Not able to find alternatives to Horizon milk in Dallas.

Hi,

We have 13 months old child and 6 1/2 yr old. We are thinking of switching baby to organic milk form Enfamil. I am trying to find out alternatives to Horizon organic milk in Dallas.  I checked out in Sams, Walmart, Target and Kroger.  None of them are selling anything other than Horizon milk and store brands.

Target sells archers organic milk which has 1 star rating. It also sells oakform milk which is from Dean foods.  It is not organic. But seems to be processed with more QC. Price is some where between normal milk and organic milk. Kroger sells simple truth organic which is their store brand.

Is concerns expressed regarding Horizon milk real? Considering there are no alternatives, my only option is to get horizon milk? Please share if you know other options in Dallas I am missing.

 Thanks.

Re: Not able to find alternatives to Horizon milk in Dallas.

  • I have seen some posts about Horizon not in compliance with organic processes. Though, I am going to get Horizon until I discover and evaluate other alternatives. Lack of alternatives are kind surprise to me. All big stores are filled with Horizon and store brand organic milk.

  • Why haven't you checked Whole Foods or Central Market?  CM usually carries store brand (HEB stuff for a higher price than at HEB since we have no HEBs here) and has good, consistent quality.  You can also try calling Lucky Layla as they're a local dairy and I think they're organic.  I believe they have a dairy store, though CM also carries their products.  though, if they're in the overhead spray zone for mosquitoes, then they may not be able to claim that their products are fully organic.  I know people at the farmer's markets have had this issue.  Braum's isn't organic, but it's fairly close in practice, so it's another option.

ETA: Tom Thumb sells their own brand.  I can't remember what Albertson's sells.  There's also Sprouts.  I'm pretty sure they sell an additional brand.  I don't know what Trader Joe's sells as they haven't opened the Plano store yet, that I know of.

  • Hi Karen,

Thanks for the information. Whole Foods, Central Market and Trader Joe's are far from my location. I can definitely manage it to Sprouts. Is Tom Thumb store brand better than other store brands (Kroger/ Target).

  • We rarely go to Tom Thumb, so I don't know how their milk compares.  I was in Fiesta today and the only organic milk they have is Horizon, so cross that off the list.

Sprouts may or may not have more than Horizon.  I remember seeing Horizon there, but *think* they may have another option. It may be their store brand, though.  The closest one is a bit of a haul from me, so I don't go all that often.  Make sure you check your expiration dates, as I've had issues with them (and heck, with Kroger and Target too) not pulling expired dairy off shelves.

Sprouts isn't a true farmer's market, but they do have fast enough turnover on produce that it's usually quite fresh. It's also cheap.  Sometimes their produce isn't so great, so if they're having an off week, try them again later as they usually have very fresh produce with a high turnover. They do have an organic produce section, though I was surprised that it wasn't bigger.

If you buy their meat, just make sure you use or freeze it within a day or two as it doesn't hold well.  The meat is fine, it just spoils quickly.  I don't know if that's because it's less fresh or just less processed. Their fish doesn't move fast enough for me to buy it (been there, done that).

Also, they run two ads, and both are active on Wednesdays.  Because of that, Wednesdays are the best days to shop for savings there.

Even though it's not organic, I've had good luck with Braum's.  Their milk is cheap and it's truly fresh.  It actually tastes like they pasture their cows.  I buy their butter for baking as it's considerably fresher than the other brands.  It's also usually cheaper, even when the other brands are on sale.  They also refuse to put any stores more than X number of miles from their dairy as that compromises quality and freshness.  I appreciate that!

  • Doesn't Dallas have a Whole Foods?

That's what we buy. You cannot beat the prices compared to the other stores in our area.

  • Do you have a Market Street near you? I want to say they carry at least 2 brands of organic milk (one being Horizon). Sprouts definitely carries their own store brand too. (although I didn't know about the Horizon hoopla, so obviously I have no idea how "good" their store brand is).

Like the others said, you can check into Lucky Layla, or look into whether your area has a farmer's market? We live in Coppell and our market used to have an awesome dairy farmer but he hasn't been attending this year, and I can't for the life of me remember the name. He had milk, drinkable yogurt, and cheese, and I believe he even sold raw milk direct from his farm.

  • I also have a 13 month old on organic whole, in the far north Dallas suburbs. We buy pretty much only Central Market or Whole Foods milk. I know you said you don't have either one near you but you might consider making an occasional trip. This is what we do. We have a WF only 5 min away from us so i supplement from there when needed, because the Plano CM is about 20 min away. What I've found though is that the CM organic wcm almost always has really good expiration dates, so I can usually buy several when I do make the trip, especially because it's such a great price. For example, we went to CM two weeks ago and their CM organic milk had an expiration date of October 1, so I bought five of them to last for awhile, and then if I run out before we make it back to CM (which is usually only once a month or so) then I'll supplement with milk from WF or even horizon from somewhere else. Just an idea for you, we love Central Market products so much it's worth it to me to make an occasional trip out of my way, and stock up on things like organic milk while I'm there.
  • Hi,

Thanks to all of you for helpful suggestions.  Except Sprouts (6 miles) none of those stores (Whole Foods, Central Market, Trader Joe and Market street) are near to me. Whole foods is around 12 miles. Let me know if it is ok to switch between different brands ( horizon, store brands and once in while brands we get from whole foods/sprouts).

  • Thanks for your help. We are living in Valley Ranch. Sprouts might work out fine for us for occasional trip. Do they sell better organic brand than horizon and kroger/target store brands.
