NMscuba & others who've done CGH

We're planning on doing CGH this cycle if we have ~3-4 embies or more on day 5.

My clinic uses a send-out lab- Genesis Genetics. They offer a 24 hour turnaround service with a fresh transfer on day 6. My RE says sometimes this works out and other times they just freeze them on day 5. I'm going to have them do whatever they recommend obviously.

Just curious what your experience with CGH is. Both of my m/c were due to chromosomal abnormalities and i'd really like to not have to go through that again. That's probably my main reason for doing it.

Also- have you been given any info on thawing a frozen embie to biopsy and then refreezing? I know this was not recommended in the past with the old type of freezing, but with vitrification, I was told this could be done. Just not sure I should do it on our lone frozen embie.

 Thanks! :)

Re: NMscuba & others who've done CGH

  • I haven't had CGH done, but we are certainly considering it for IVF#2 (which will hopefully be for a sibling).  I did have a few thoughts which might be useful.  One, our clinic can but really doesn't recommend thawing and re-freezing.

Two, esp. if you get a lot of follies.... I'm a firm believer in FET over fresh transfer.  I had so much cramping while my ovaries were coming back down to size that I think that really hurt my poor embie trying to implant (and my RE conceeded this might be true as well).

Fx you get lots of healthy embies!

that's an interesting point. I usually hyperstimulate, so I've always kind of wondered if a FET would be better for me anyway. thanks! :)

  • Hi there! I think in your situation it sounds like CGH is a good idea.

We did the day 5/6 biopsy, freezing, and then will be doing a FET. Honestly, I really liked it that way for a couple of reasons. One is, it gave us until day 6 to let some of the other embies grow. It turns out that more of our day 6 blasts were genetically normal compared to the day 5 blasts. Also, I would be worried that something might go wrong in the rush. Even though the cycle is longer, I feel less stressed in this process and my body has had a chance to recover a bit before the transfer.

Even with vitrification, I don't think I would do CGH for a lone embie. we have one lone embie and I am not sure what we are going to do, but the doc said no for re-freezing.

    GL doll!

thanks for responding! you bring up alot of good points. The FET post CGH testing is sounding more and more like a good idea to me.

Wishing you lots of luck with your upcoming transfer. :)

  • I did not do CGH but I did PGD twice. Even though I had 2 that passed PGD and were alraedy frozen one did not make the thaw. My RE called me after my c/p and said that if was to come back and do IVF#3 that he would do everything the same yet not do the freeze and do the 24hour turn around test so that we could transfer on day 6. We are not going back to do IVF#3 but I thought that it was interesting what he said as freezing can, and did in my case, do damage to the embies. GL!

    Multiple ectopics, 2 failed IVF's
IVF #1: Did not get to ET, embies all failed PGD (major chromosomal defects)
IVF #2: We have 2 chromosomally perfect embies as a result of PGD (Boy/Girl) 1 failed the thaw (Girl) Transferred 1, yet ended as a c/p
Thought it was the end of our TTC Journey 6/20/2012
SHOCK BFP 9/28/2012: IT'S A BOY! and everything is normal !!!!!!

Little A born 38w 2d on 05/23/13 and is a true miracle for this IF Vet!

This is a good point. Roxie, does your clinic do vitrification or standard cryo?

ahh ok, I thought vitrification had better rates of thaw. so good point. I wish we didn't all have to make such hard decisions.

  • I have done CGH testing twice.  I will also be doing it again for IVF #3 in the next few months.  The first two times, I did day three testing and then transfer on Day 5. This next time I will be doing testing on Day 5 and then freezing and doing a transfer later. I can't say anything about the latter option just yet, but I am really optimistic and I do feel that the rush of having the results and transfer might make for results that might not be as clear.  That is just an opinion, but after having the rushed results 2 other times, I am all for waiting so I get the BEST results, not the fastest.  I had such different results in each cycle, that I guess I don't completely trust the quick turn around.

I agree with the previous poster about doing an FET as opposed to transfer on Day 6.  In my last IVf cycle, we transferred on day 5 and my estrogen was so high, that I think that may have contributed to the BFN.

I can't offer any advice about the lone embryo.  I am not too sure about whether or not you should refreeze and embryo.  Whatever you decide, good luck!  I hope it all works out. :)

After 1 IUI, 3 IVF's with CGH/CCS testing, 10 early miscarriages, and lots of tears and frustration, we are moving on to Domestic Infant Adoption!  We are so excited to see what the future holds.

That is what I thought but I still lost 1 in the thaw. I am ruling that as bad embie quality though

This is what I was thinking. The thought that my cycle could play out so many different ways is overwhelming.

I really appreciate everyone's responses!! It seems like there are pro's and con's to everything. I will just have to make a last minute decision based on how the embies are doing, how i'm doing, and what my RE and embryologist want to do. Thanks, everyone.
