When DD gets to 1 year I'm going to (gradually) stop pumping at work. I plan to offer WCM during the day, and nurse in the am when she wakes up and at night before bed for a while at least. I am kind of confused about this whole thing though...so I have some questions!
1. Do I offer only WCM during the day, or can water and other liquids take the place of bm? (I'm offering solids too obviously!)
2. What is the max # of ounces of WCM a 1 yr. old can have during the day?
3. DD seems to consistently wake at 5 am then go back to bed until 7/8, and all the sleep training I've done can't seem to break this waking, so I've just been going in and nursing her, then I nurse her again when she wakes up for real around 7/8. Can you think of any way I can break this 5 am waking? Or should I just nurse twice in the morning (once at 5, once again at 7/8)?
4. If I decide to wean from bm completely, would I give WCM before bed? Or just the last time at dinner? And how would I deal with the 5 am and 7/8 am wake up then?
Phew, that's a lot! TIA
Re: XP: Qs about starting WCM (from bf'ing)
You can offer both, but water isn't really a replacement for BM. We started introducing WCM at 11 months, per our pedi's ok. At the time DS was taking 3 bottles at daycare, so we replaced 1 with WCM in a sippy. Eventually they all got replaced and they told me that generally, he was drinking about the same amount (15 oz). I continued nursing in the morning and before bed.
Ask you pedi, but I believe most recommend no more than 24oz. at that age.
Have you tried having your H go in and rock her back to sleep?
When I weaned, I did not replace the pre-bed nursing session with milk. I had DH put DS to bed for a week until he "got" that he wouldn't be nursing any more (it was really hard, but I knew the only way to do it was to have DH take over). We offered a sippy of milk first thing in the morning - still do, actually.
If sleep training isn't working for that 5am feeding, your DD may actually be hungry then. You could experiment with different things, like giving her a sippy cup or bottle instead of nursing or offering water. Or like PP suggested, you could send in DH. If she still wakes up, feed her!
