Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Brief cries during sleep?

DD has FINALLY started to STTN and we are just cutting out last feed (late perhaps but was OK for us) around 5am over the next week or so.

However, she often cries out briefly in her sleep a few times a night (7pm - 6am). I don't go in and since I don't have a video monitor I'm assuming she is still asleep -- if she fusses more than a minute she'll still usually get back to sleep but I figure she might have woken up.

The sleep cries wake me up and I am not trying to fix it I'm just curious if it is a common thing or not?

I turn her monitor down at night and have considered turning if off -- we share  a wall with her room so I hear her through that but I feel guilty turning the monitor off but it might help me sleep

Re: Brief cries during sleep?

  • My DD will be 13 months tomorrow, and also just started STTN.  She too will randomly cry out in the night.  I have a video monitor, and it seems to be when she wakes up & is shifting position.  I don't go in, and she will be back to sleep within a few minutes.  I also share a wall, and keep the volume muted b/c I am a very light sleeper.  Realistically, by this age I don't even think the monitors are necessary if you're sleeping that close.  If she screams or has a bad cough or something, you're going to hear it.  I am finally learning that sleep for ME is important too, and that she will be ok in there.

  • DS started sleeping through the night finally at 16 months, and has done this ever since.  It will happen a couple times starting at 11:30, but then between 5am and when he gets up at 7 something, he does it a LOT.  It wakes me also and I can hardly sleep during those couple hours, but if I turn the monitor off I won't hear him when he wakes up for the morning, so I'm not sure what to do about it.  I think it's very normal, though.

  • My DD also cries out in her sleep at night.  Sometimes once a night, sometimes more frequently than that.   I check the video feed on my phone and she is usually half asleep and just re-positioning herself in her crib.  I also thought about turning down/off the monitor because I wake up every single time she does, but I just can't do it yet.  Maybe in a few months I'll feel differently :)  But anyway, I'm pretty sure that it's normal.

  • DS has been STTN since 9 months?  He has the randoms too,  I assume he wakes up looking for the paci but unless it has been a couple of mins I don't go in if it is just fussy cries.  I do have the monitor down,  we don't share a wall but if he is really cring it will easily wake me up over the monitor.

  • LO does this most nights unless he is exhausted. It doesn't last long and he goes right back to sleep. Like pp I keep the volume on the monitor low. We are on a different floor then him.

  • DS does that sometimes... maybe twice a night once or twice a week?  I think some nights he doesn't sleep as soundly as others, just like me :)

I don't have a video monitor, but I always assumed he cries long enough to find his paci or lovey.  It's never more than a minute and I never go in.

  • This is super common. I have witnessed DS do this when sleeping in the stroller, car etc. Turn the monitor off.

  • DD does the same thing. We don't use a monitor at night, we just sleep with our doors open.

  • My LO does this some nights.  DH and I call them shout outs.  DH generally doesn't wake for them so he'll ask me in the morning, "any shout outs last night?"!

My friend's DD does the same.

  • DD cries sometimes in the middle of the night.  Not every night, sometimes only once, and sometimes a few times.  She uses a paci so once she finds that she goes back to sleep. I think it's normal for them to wake up to readjust or after having a dream and their first instinct is to cry.  The cries have significantly reduced in the last month.  She's been STTN for a while.
