XP: Hiccups as movement

My midwife said you can even count hiccups as movement.. I don't think this is a standard "practice" necessarily but for people who DO count them.. how do you? every hiccup? or just that he has the hiccups as one movement?

Personally, I don't think I'd be satisfied knowing baby was okay if he just got the hiccups and hiccuped 50 + times. I feel like I'd need some movements in there. Baby hasn't moved much today but after I pushed around on my stomach he has had the hiccups for the past 5 minutes or so.

ETA: For those who do count or are worried about movement, if baby gets the hiccups, are you reassured by those? Just curious :)

  • I was told specifically not to count hiccups as movement, so it wouldn't reassure me.  I was also told not to count movements in response to a stimuli (i.e. me pushing on my belly/poking at her).  If you're worried about movement, drink or eat something cold & lay on your left side, and really focus on movements.

  • I don't count hiccups as movements but they are reassuring. I have been counting kicks since week 22 (early, I know, but my history with a late loss causes me to be a little crazy.) I also have a chart that I keep because it's not just that your baby has moved but you should also be making sure that the length of time it takes them to get to 10 kicks hasn't drastically changed. I keep a chart just because it's one less thing that I have to remember.

     * This.  My MW said not to count them, but also said the same thing about the cold glass of water and lay on your left side.
