My DD hates the new safety gate.

My fiance and I decided to buy a safety gate to put between our kitchen and dining area because she loves to come in the kitchen while I cook and mess around with things that she's not suppose to.  Plus we don't think it is safe for her to be crawling around while the stove is on.  Before we got the gate, I use to sit her in her highchair in the kitchen while I cooked but she didn't like that too much.  We child proofed our lower cabinets and she has figured out how to open them now.  So we just bought a saftey gate.  She screams bloody murder at us for keeping her out and I feel really guilty about doing it, but its for her own safety.  I try and talk to her about how we want her to be safe and why we put the gate up but she just cries and cries.  I don't know what else to do.  Anybody else's kid having a hard time with safety gates?

  • I only have one on my stairs. DS hates it! Stands at the bottom and screams and shakes it!

Can you give her something different/special to play with while you are in the kitchen and she's not?

  • In our old place we had to have one so ds couldn't get in the kitchen.  He really hated it when I was in there.  Now, we have one that separates our dining room from 3 stairs that go to our lower living space and it doesn't seem to bother dd but we need to get one to separate our dining/kitchen area from the living room because I don't like her crawling around there either.  They've always been fine unless I'm on the other side of the gate.

  • No advice really. DS likes to be in the same room as us as well. We let him in our kitchen while cooking since our cabinets are baby proofed and I rarely cook without DH being home to distract him if I need to move hot items from the stove to the sink. I will say though that DS was inventive and learned how to scale the gate and get to where we were. Kids certainly are inventive! Good Luck!
