What week to start being concerned about a transverse baby?

I'm halfway through 26 weeks and I'm fairly sure my baby daughter has been transverse for the past week or two.  It started with me feeling very strong "slinky-like" kicks on each side of my abdomen every night. All night.  Full force, I felt head at one side of my abdomen (very low!) and feet at the other.  Since then her feet always seem to be kicking my left hip bone.  At night she's always got her feet on the left, head on the right.

I've been reading spinningbabies.org and they say it's normal up to 26 weeks, but since she seems to be setting up camp in this position, I want to start figuring out what I can do short of seeing a chiropractor because I don't have the money to do that unless I absolutely need to.

Can anyone offer advice and/or link me to good resources on getting her to rotate?  I read in an out of context quote that Ina May says most transverse babies flip during labor (?) but I'm delivering at a hospital and am certain they won't like me asking to see if the baby flips during my labor, and risk an emergency c-section...

I also just received my Hypnobabies home study course, and I see they have tracks where you try to get the baby to flip through visualization so I do have some plans up my sleeve but I'll take all the tips I can get!

Re: What week to start being concerned about a transverse baby?

  • My second was transverse until about 32w.  We had our u/s really late at about 31w, and they confirmed what I suspected.  She had her butt on my left side and her head on my right.  She was facing down though.  Eventually she just moved on her own.  I imagine that it gets pretty uncomfortable in there in the transverse position since we aren't really that wide, so she'll probably head down on her own.  But I'd keep thinking about anything spinningbabies.com says.

  • I'm normally a lurker, but I just went through this and thought I could let you know what happened to me.  I am currently 40 w 6 days...my baby has been head down since they started feeling for position around 34 weeks.  However, just this past week, at 40 w 2 days, we learned my baby had flipped into a transverse lie position!  I was shocked!  Since I was 'past' my guess date, my doc instantly started to push me towards a Version procedure the next morning.  I went home, called my doula and Hypnobabies instructor and we set out on a plan to encourage the baby to flip back down.  I did the Hypnobabies Breech/Flip baby track which was great...I really visualized helping baby move.  I also did 3 moxibustion treatments.  We returned to the hospital the next morning and found that baby had returned to head down!!  My situation isn't as common, but I've learned babies can move head down up to the end.

ETA:  I also did spinning babies exercises.

  • Baby's can change position even one labor begins, granted it is probably a little more uncomfortable then if it happened earlier

  • My last baby flipped from transverse to head down at 34 weeks. I spent most of weeks 32-33 doing the spinningbabies exercises. after that we were headed for chiro/acupuncture help if that didn't work. My midwife said to not worry till 34-35 weeks and we'd look at a version at 36 if all else failed.
