NBR: I am the worst mother ever! :(

We went to a pool party yesterday. Myself and the boys were in the pool from 1pm until about 4pm with no shade. Well, despite reapplying sunscreen 5 or 6 times between myself, DS#1 and my cousin doing it DS#2 got his first sunburn. It looks horrible. He is very white usually and I don't keep him out in the sun always have a shirt on him in the water and am very careful with sunscreen. Yesterday my older son took DS#2's shirt off before they got in the pool together and I didn't even think twice about it. Every time I look at his little arms and shoulders and chest I want to cry. He is acting completely normally, playing and hasn't complained at all. I am putting Vitamin E oil and aloe on it, I gave him Advil just in case, haven't put clothes on him so it doesn't rub and I am making sure he drinks plenty, just in case. I feel awful and I am honestly afraid to take him in public for fear of public judgement or worse!

I got sunburn too...bad! on my face and shoulders and upper back so I threw away the bottle of sunscreen wondering if it just wasn't any good. :( Blah, there is no real point to this post except to tell vent about how awful I feel about this.

  • Poor guy.  It is not your fault thouhg, you reapplied.  Some kids are just more sensitive.  Some other things you can try are spraying the burn with some super steeped black tea (cooled of course)....the tanic acid can help to suck the burn out.  You need to let it air dry off the skin although this works better right after the burn starts.  Also try doing some oatmeal baths to keep the skin hydrated.  all in all, time will heal it.  He will be fine!

  • Don't beat yourself up about it.  It's not like you just didn't use sunscreen out of laziness or something.  I know some parents that honestly don't even make the effort, but that's obviously not the case here, so really, don't worry about it.
