Pregnant after 35

35+ - Differences in pre-natal care

Hey everyone! Intro'd myself this week, just found out we're pregnant with #2 and we're excited! Although we have an almost 3 year old it seems like this is all new! I'm curious what differences to expect during the pregnancy in the "after 35" group now. Are there more tests or ultrasounds? Any information anyone can share is appreciated!

Re: 35+ - Differences in pre-natal care

  • In my OB practice, really the only difference is that they offer a 1st trimester birth defect screening (we declined and just did the Quad Screen, which we had done with our first baby) and the 20 week ultrasound is a "level II" with a perinatologist reading the scans. Other than that, it's pretty much all the same. Oh, and with #2, they also had us do a genetic counselor meeting when we had our U/S, to talk about family history and any possible issues. Not a big deal and they didn't have us do it this time.

OH, and your charts are all marked "AMA" for "advanced maternal age." :)

  • Congratulations!

I haven't had any difference in my care this time than I did when I was under 35. I could have opted for screenings and such, but I did not.

  • I think the checkups at the end get more frequent sooner than for our younger peers.

  • Prior to 36 weeks, I had a normal schedule of appointments and I had 2 ultra sounds. At 36 weeks I had the usual weekly appts., but I also had a weekly ultra sound and non stress test.

My OB will also not let me go past 41 weeks, as that is what he prefers for those that are over 35.  I am 37....

    Good luck!

  • I only have 1 (so no comparison to a previous pregnancy) and was 40 while pregnant.  My OB had me do NST's twice a week for the last month to ensure everything was fine. This didn't seem to be common practice though. In hindsight it was overkill but I was happy about it at the time b/c we had tried for 3 yrs to get pregnant and 2 of my family members had experienced fetal demise at full term which statistically is higher for women over 40(although the absolute risk is still low).

  • I am in the early weeks - but no changes at all so far.

  • I am 38 and haven't seen any difference in prenatal care vs. my younger counterparts.

I was offered the MaterniT test but declined.

  • I have not been treated differently this time around as compared to when I was 33. I even had a miscarriage in between.  Everything has been pretty much the same.  I do plan to ask my OB to give me a late-term u/s sooner than the last time because I had it at 40w5d (the one before that was the A/S at 18w) and they realized the amniotic fluid was low and I had to be induced that very day.  I don't want to risk going through a potential problem again.
