CP: Midwives & OBs

I was curious how many of us are seeing MWs vs OBs for our pregnancies.

ETA: When I say who are you "seeing" I mean who do you plan on going to for all routine care and having there for your delivery assuming all goes well. Just to clarify :)

Re: CP: Midwives & OBs

  • I live in Ontario and have a team of two midwives. Both were my care providers for last baby. I will hopefully have another home birth and I want the midwives to make it this time.... Long story!

  • I like my OB, and I think things will be fine with him. I really would have preferred a midwife, but unfortunately there aren't any midwives in northern Louisiana. Sad

  • Midwife for me. I really want a home birth (had one for my 4th and accidentally for my 5th) but because our insurance won't cover it I don't know if we can swing it. I had an awesome team of CNMs and a great hospital last time, but if my labor is quick again and I don't make it I really don't want to do the whole ambulance ride stay a night at the hospital when I know I'm fine thing again. The conpromise might be to go to a birth center my insurance will pay for, and then if we don't make it, they maybe could just send a MW to check on us. Then we would only have to pay for that portion out of pocket. Ugh, we will see.
  • Had an OB for DD and while all was fine, I am doing a midwifery practice this time.

You might also want to add General Practitioner to your poll as that is an option for some folks. :D

  • I've got an OB appt and ultrasound on Monday. If everything looks good and normal, I'm leaning strongly towards midwives.

  • Midwife. I love that they are there for me all the time I can call them for questions or concerns and they are very caring. Even the one that I though was harsh ended up delivering DS and in the end she ended up being very encouraging during my birth.

I had originally intended to try a med free birth but found it wasn't for me. They had no problem calling in for an epidural and respecting my wishes at that point. The midwife was there was me from the time I got to the hospital, to the time I delivered my baby. I can't say enough great things about it. I wouldn't have it any other way

One thing that encouraged me to look for a midwife is that I was seeing one of the top OB's in my area who ended up being extremely insensitive towards a missed miscarriage I had discovered at 10.5 weeks. I switched him right away. I had another miscarriage before this pregnancy and the midwives called me just to make sure I was emotionally coping ok and if I needed anything they would be there for me. What a difference.
  • OB for me.  I was on the fence on which to go with, but got really strong recs for my OB because she or her NP handle everything from start to finish.  My first meeting with both was great & I felt completely at ease/comfortable with them.
Myles was so pumped about the baby . . . until he figured out he'd have to share all his toys!!!

  • I am using the same OB I used last time but I am seriously considering hiring a doula also for this time around.

  • OB this time but last time I went to a clinic with several CNMs and one OB on staff for emergencies and I wish I could use them again, my midwives were great.  Sadly I've moved and couldn't find a CNM in my end of town.

  • I see a midwife in a practice of OBs, a NP, and a MW.  I am hoping to switch to a birthing center further along (it's about 1.5 hr drive though so we'll see) because my local hospital doesn't let midwives deliver.  So I'm seeing her for prenatal care only.

Ditto. Except I'm in North Bumblefck, NY. If there are midwives, there aren't any that take my insurance...

    OMG too many tickers...

  • I really wanted a midwife, but am still on the wait list for one. So my family doctor referred me to a family doctor who delivers instead of the OBs I hated so much last time. Yay me.
  • My OB and MW work together. I feel really good about this option because I want a med free birth and I feel like my MW will really coach me through it. OB will deliver the baby.
