LO's that had a hard time taking bottles

LO is 11 weeks and I've EBF. 23 weeks ago I started doing one bottle a day. And it was a struggle but he seem to accept it after a few tries but these past few days he started screaming when feeding with a bottle again. Can this be related to just a wonder week or growth spurt fussiness?
What kinds of things have you ladies done with your LO that initially had a hard time with bottle feeding? Any tricks or advice?

  • Who's feeding the bottle? When I give it, I hold her like I am BFing.

Sometimes we have to "tickle: LO's chin to have her latch and suck.

    We're using Tommee Tippee.

  • I am going through the EXACT same thing! Its been going on now for almost a month and we try every day.  I've tried so many different bottle/nipple combos, different positions, my mom tried, dh tried, I feel like I'm running out of ideas. The lactation consultant said try spoon feeding if she is absolutely not taking it once I go back to work. I purchased a comotomo bottle online, which is essentially a boob, lol, and that squirts milk out. So at least when we try she is getting some milk.

Sorry I have no advice but I just wanted you to know you aren't alone!

  • I had to be out of the house and my mom draped my worn tshirt over her chest. She held DD like she was BFing. After a few days, DD got the hang of it. Now she takes bottles from the nanny with no problem.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • DD is EBF and we were giving her a bottle once a day from 4 weeks on.  She is 11 weeks now and began to have trouble taking the bottle about 2 weeks ago.  She flat out refused the bottle the day before she started day care.... of course.  So - her first day of day care she drank 1 ounce all day (6 hours) and she was screaming when we arrived to pick her up... that was Monday.  So, last night we (my Mom, DH and I) all took turns offering the bottle when she showed hunger.  She finally wound up taking her first bottle from me around 6pm (I BF when we picked her up from day care at 1).  Then she drank 4 bottles overnight and drank 6 ounces at day care today (5 hours).  I was surprised that she took the bottle from me before other caretakers.  My theory is that she associates me with food and it was BM  in the bottle so maybe it just seemed natural to her.  Anyway - try anything that you think might work.  For me it was holding her in a breastfeeding position and letting the BM drip into her mouth so that she got a taste.  I also never tried to force her to keep the nipple in her mouth.  I figured I can't force her to suckle so what's the point keeping the nipple in her mouth - it just made her mad.

    Good luck!

  • My LO is 12weeks now and we started trying the bottle at 6 weeks during the times I would not be with her after I went back to work. She was doing fine until last week. Then she started to fuss a ton and seemed to refuse the bottle, drinking only 1 oz from each bottle at Daycare. This weekend, DH and I worked out the kinks. It was the nipple flow rate and the age of the milk.  First we changed the milk to one day old, only because I pump at work. We had been trying to use three day old milk since I have a little extra. The 1 day old milk seemd to go down better, but there was still some fussing. Then we realized that LO is 12 weeks which is practically 3 months, so we tried the next flow rate nipple. That seem to do the trick. Last night and this morning, LO happily took the bottle from DH and we hope she will do the same at Daycare tomorrow!  So try changing to the next size up nipple.
