Pretty sure my kid is cross eyed

I didn't want to make any judgements too early because development and immature nerves and stuff, but over the last few days it's becoming evident that Owen may have inherited my strabismus.

It doesn't look too bad yet, but it definitely looks like one eye turns in.

I'm due for an eye checkup, so I figure I'll ask if I can bring him along to get checked out too.

Anyone else have lazy eyes in the family?

Re: Pretty sure my kid is cross eyed

  • Married sister wrote about this too. I told her that I had a friend who was cross eyed but she grew out of it and you would have never even known that she was that way before. She grew out of it before we started school even.

  • My right eye is terrible because all the nerve endings work with my left eye instead. I am terrified that any of my kids will get that, but it is too hard to tell really early. I watch out for hints of a vision problem. So far DD seems fine, but obviously we can't know for a little while yet.

  • I had two surgeries for strabismus. As a baby, I looked ridiculous and I had nystagmus so my head bobbed around like crazy. Good thing my parents loved me, because my baby pictures are pathetic.
  • Hey,

I wrote about this earlier today. Willow has one eye that seems "lazy" as well. From the research I have done it seems that the eye "matures" at about 4 months to the point where it should be "straight". I noticed in some pictures Willow's eyes are a little uneven when she looks to the side and sometimes when I move something across her face. It has really upset me because she is such a beautiful sweet girl and I couldn't imagine her being made fun of for something like this. I know it is a long way away but irrationally this is my fear as of right now. I talked to her peditrician about it on Tuesday and she said to look at her eyes for the refection. If the reflection is on a different area in each eye it is easier to start the diagnosis. I saw this yesterday a few times. So, I called today and made an appointment to have her looked at again on Tuesday. She will likely be refered to a specialist at this point. I want her treated for this asap (as soon as they suggest she is old enough). I read that the earlier she is treated, the better the outcome.

Most people cannot see this, I can. I am nervous about the testing that gets done in order to be officially diagnosed. I will let you know what is happening after her appointment on Tuesday.

  • I was born with pretty severe strabismus. I meant to reply to the earlier message about this. I had 5 surgeries from the time I was 10 months to 19yrs. I also did corrective lenses and patches as a kid. The last surgery worked for me and you can't tell my eyes used to turn in. Ironically I'm now married to a surgeon working on his pediatric opthalmology fellowship right now.

I was very worried about about DD inheriting this from me, but she seems okay so far. Seeing a specialist might help you figure out if it's really a concern at this point or just eye muscles developing.

  • Apparently I should have paid more attention to the posts from earlier today!

I had surgery for my turn when I was 5 and it's almost all the way better.  It's worse when I'm tired, and I can over exaggerate what turn there still is by focusing with my "bad" eye.

marriedsister, FWIW, I was never made fun of for my turn, well, not when I was a kid that I can recall.  My boss gives me a hard time about it sometimes, but in a light-hearted like-a-big-brother kinda way.  I do remember having to wear an eye patch for a bit, but it was before I started school, so it was NBD.

I remember reading somewhere not to worry too much about apparent turns until 6 months because the eyes are still maturing, so I don't think I'll be too concerned yet, but will probably ask my eye doc!

  • Definitely talk to your eye Dr. DH and I both had our annual appointments over the summer and we had to bring DD with us. Our Dr does a free screening for babies once they hit 9 months. They said that pedis aren't super trained in eyes, so they do it to try and help our parents and pedis alike. We'll set up her appointment in January since both DH and I wear glasses.

  • I have a lazy eye but it doesn't do it all the time. Only when I am tired or many times you can notice it in pictures.  I never had any sort of correction for it, but it was worse when I was a child.  I wouldn't freak out about it yet but I would def look into some correction if it does become a problem.  I was teased about it all the way up to highschool and it gave me some serious self esteem issues.  Even now I'm always thinking about it when I talk to people I'm always wondering what my eyes look like.  I do worry that LO will have the same problem, I'm just hoping I can catch it and fix it early.
