Baby Names

Luke/ Lukas

DH and I are considering either Luke/ Lukas for a boy name. Middle name would be John after DH. So far that is the ONLY name on our list. Boy names are hard for us, for whatever reason.

Any thoughts? Love it or hate it? Any suggestions for names with similar feel we could add to our list? MN is 100 percent going to be John btw.

If it helps, DD's name is Anneka.

Re: Luke/ Lukas

  • Luke John sounds choppy with two 1 syllable names so I'd go with Lukas John and nn Luke.  I really like the name Luke, it was on my list but DH said nay.
    P.S. I also love your DD's name!

  • I like the name Luke spelled that way. If it is Lukas, I prefer the spelling Lucas. I would go with Lucas John. Just my thoughts, but I always appreciate originality if you do choose Lukas John.
  • I like Luke more normally, but Luke John is a little choppy and it sounds like someone is reciting the books of the Bible (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John...). I much prefer Lucas over Lukas.

  • Lucas John would be a great name not a fan of the spelling Lukas.
  • Our son will be Luke Matthew (Matthew is DH's name), so I love Luke.  Luke John does sound choppy, but if you like it, use it.  You probably won't say those two names together too much anyway.

  • I like Lukas John.  The K doesn't bother me.  I think it "goes" better with your DD's name anyhow.

If you really liked Luke better, I might consider Luke Jonathan, but you said mn is not up for discussion.  :-)

    I agree.

  • Lukas is a 100% legit German and Scandinavian spelling of the name. Your DD has a Scandinavian name too, so I think they go together well. If the mn is John, definitely do Lukas over just Luke- Luke John is really choppy.

Thanks! I never realized that people might have an issue with the spelling of Lukas. Yes I am of Scandinavian heritage, which is why I personally prefer the "K" spelling. Good to know, regardless.

To each his own I suppose :-)

  • I love the name Luke
  • I defnitely would do Lukas John (it sounds a lot better than Luke John). We are thinking about Lucas as well, either Lucas Jay or Lucas James. DH picked it out and I just fell in love with it. Wonderful name. Good choice :)

  • Lucas John is nice (I prefer the c to the k).

  • I love Luke/Lucas.

Dislike Lukas. It looks too weird, and I always want to pronounce it different.

    I vote for Lucas John.

  • Lukus John sounds better but I perfer Luke. How many times are you going to use his full name anyway? I think we over think middle names! Spell it with a K it matches DD and your heritage!

  • Hm... that's tough. I like Luke a lot better than Lukas, but agree with the pp who wrote that Luke John is a little choppy. Lukas John has better flow. However, middle names are rarely used so I'd probably still go with Luke.
