? about spotting when postdue after exam/sweep... TMI

I have already talked to the doctor, but I am still worried.

I had an internal on Tuesday where I think she swept my membranes (I was 40 weeks on Sept 2nd, so 2 days post due when this happened).    It did not hurt at the time at all.   But,  I bleed A LOT...  I called twice that afternoon.  She said it was normal unless I was bleeding through a regular full maxi-pad an hour.   Well-- I was not that heavy, but I had tiny clots of bright red, the toilet was red when I peed, etc.   That lasted for a full 24 hours.   Then it went to brown for about 48 hours... lots and lots of brown mucus.    I think i lost my plug (it was disgusting like a big jelly thing all brown and yellow and white).   I called again on Thursday when i was still getting all of this and she again assured me it was normal.   Then I went back to pink/red (not a lot, just spotting), and some discharge that was like long strings, some of which were red.      Then it went back to brown jelly.

This morning I had some pink spotting and lots of thick brown mucus.

So-- I feel ridiculous calling the office again, but I just can't imagine that most people have this much spotting-brown mucus.    It had pretty much been non-stop for 5 days now.   The baby is moving ok, but she was never a huge mover, so of course I am a worried wreck.    She has made all kick counts, so I have not went to L&D-- but I am kind of an emotional wreck.

My son went 13 days past due, so I am worried I am in for another week of this distress.

Anyone else have this much bleeding/spotting/mucus from a sweep and if so-- when did it stop?

I have had some cramping off and on, but I don't think I am having actual contractions or anything (with my son I was induced and it was a very difficult experience, so I don't really have much to compare it to).

Urgh.

  • nothing you have described seems out of the ordinary.  seems like you lost your mucous plug, there could be some chunks of it still hanging around coming out etc.  the amount of mucousy discharge at the end of my last pregnancy was disturbing and traumatizing, but nothing out of the ordinary.  the bright red blood is what makes me a little nervous, but if it is stopping and starting or just spotting then nothing to be overly concerned about!

    hope your LO comes soon!

  • The bottom line is that nothing we say will reassure you. If you are concerned, call your doc or go to L&D to get checked out.
