Shallow, stupid post - what will you wear to deliver

I know this is so shallow, but totally something I've been thinking about lately.  I'm having a home birth and have no clue what I'm going to wear.  I wear yoga pants around the house and obviously can't give birth in those.  I also don't really want to be totally naked or Donald Ducking it around the house.  Ideally I'd get a nursing gown that is mid-thigh, cotton, and black with spaghetti straps, but I really can't justify spending $30 on such a shallow want, especially when we're so strapped for cash right now.  If you don't have the option for a hospital gown, what are you planning to wear?

  • I just plan on wearing my favorite nightgown, which I bought from Walmart for $7. That is, if it still fits over my belly. If not, I'll buy a larger size.

  • I will be at home, so I'll wear what's comfortable at the time. I have have Pretty Pushers gown to wear if I want, but I don't know if I will.  I have given them to friends as gifts when they are birthing in the hospital or birth center and they love them. I found them on zulily for a good price.

  • With DS1 and DS2, water births at birth centers, I wore my own nursing nightgown until I got naked for the tub. I didn't want to wear anything in the tub, nor did I care at that point about being naked.

Don't stress about it. You'll probably wear what you're already in/what you're comfortable in to labor around the house, and then by the time you're ready to deliver, you'll be fine with getting naked.

  • The getting naked thing isn't a privacy issue, it's more of a tactile thing.  It's that the weight of fabric is like a security blanket for me, like a hug.

  • I wore a sports bra, tank top and a skirt. I'm no prude by any means, but I was comfortable clothed, and had no desire to get naked!
  •  I worn nothing but a nursing bra!  When the contractions got hard I did not care what I wore and I was in/out of the tub constantly. I had a doula, nurse and OB (I delivered in the hospital), I figured they were all used to seeing naked ladies, so I never even wore the gown!
  • I had an old nightgown I planned to wear. It was dirty so I had my husband throw it in the wash when labour began. Baby was born before it was clean. I ended up wearing just a sports bra.

  • For my last homebirth I wore a skirt and a nursing tank through most of the labor.  At some point I got into the tub with my tank on and when I got out I changed into a T-shirt.  And then when I got in the tub the final time I put on a swimsuit and took the bottoms off when I was ready to push.  I plan to wear something similar this time.

  • I'll be having my second hospital birth, so obviously my situation is a little different. For DS of course I had a hospital gown. It stayed on pretty much the whole time until somewhere in the middle of pushing for 3 hours. Then, just because I was so hot and frustrated, I yanked it off and delivered naked. The only people in the room were DH, my sister, the L&D nurse, and the female OB. I figured 1) they've seen lots of naked laboring women, and 2) I was more comfortable and that's what mattered most. If I was having a homebirth, I'd probably just wear an old t-shirt or sports bra. But do be prepared that you may end up wanting to wear nothing at all!

  • I could care less what I wore during labor. I was in a tank top and goucho pants. Then in the tub I was just in a sports bra. Then I pretty much didn't care anymore and ended up naked in the tub.

  • At the birthing center I arrived in a loose, short skirt and a shirt with no bra (I had labored at home and had been in and out of the tub/shower, so putting the bra on/off was annoying).  After getting in the tub at the center, I was naked from that point on.  I didn't really care.

  • I wore a hospital gown and my husband's basketball shorts for my first. When it's time for #2 (HB or BC birth) I think I would stick with the basketball shorts and just a sports bra on top.

  • I have no idea what will actually go down, but I've packed a sports bra and thin tank to wear in the tub and a shirred topped cotton dress to wear out of the tub

  • "Donald Ducking" hehehe, that's awesome!!!

I was naked when I delivered my son and didn't even notice or care. I did go to Target and get a thin spaghetti strap nightgown (which ever was on sale that day. I think it was about $4) and had it in my hospital bag so I would have an option. I think hospital gowns are too high in the neck.

  • I was at the hospital, but, during labor I wore a hospital gown, underwear (my water had broken so I needed a pad on), and a sports bra.  In the tub I wore just the sports bra and the same for pushing.  When I was pregnant I thought there was NO way I'd want to be so exposed...yea.. in that moment I didn't care who saw what.

  • I am a naked person at home alot lol and DH is used to me but being pregnant I've foung myself Donald Ducking it (this is the best term I've heard all week) but cannot imagine being comfortable this way at the birthing center. I actually have fantasize I could be naked in the tub with a blanket over the top (not in the water of course) but enough to cover me some. who knows what will happen
  • I posted earlier that I had a cotton shirred top dress to wear but I just bought a new dress today.  I'd been looking at swim cover ups for quite some time and finally found one!  I bought this at Dillards for $8.  The fabric is really soft and comfortable and actually opens up completely in the middle, where the ruffle is is just a wrap and it doesn't connect to the other side of the skirt.  I was super stoked to find it today.  Just an FYI if anyone else is looking!  It's the Dotti Seaside Smocked Ruffle Dress and I found it online for much more expensive.  Love end of year sales!

  • I wore a huge summer sun dress (think muu-muu style) that went to the knees most of the time.  When I wasn't wearing that I was wearing just a sports bra on top or absolutely nothing.  I spent a lot of time naked, but around transition I suddenly felt the need to cover up (just for a couple hours--got rid of the dress for the pushing) so I was glad to have it.

Here's a pretty good pic of it (and my midwife holding my IV of GBS antibiotics up and my H feeding me chocolate)--if you have something like this I highly recommend it.  If not, I think any flowy skirt would do with a sports bra or tank top on top.

  • I labored in maternity exercise pants (flowy 3/4 length pants) last pregnancy.  I think I had on a tank top w/ bra.  Then when I got to the hospital, they wanted to check me and I just stripped my pants (I was 9.5 cm dilated upon arrival, so pretty deep in labor) and left them off for the remaining few minutes before I pushed.  Then I stripped my shirt as soon as baby was born to breastfeed & do skin to skin.  They never even offered me a hospital gown it all went so fast.

This time, I bought a few comfy nursing clothes and sleep outfits (loose pants, easy to nurse tops) for the hospital.  I just wore the gown last time, but it was kind of weird wearing the gown w/ visitors b/c of the boob holes in the hospital gowns :-)  I wanted to look cute this time so I have like 3 outfits that are comfy (most important) but decent looking.  I bought them at consignment shops so I didn't spend too much, esp since I know from last birth there is blood afterwards and you might not want to ruin a favorite outfit.

  • With LO#1 I anticipated that I'd have a big problem because I'm kind of a prude. I'm also picky about fabrics and didn't want anything scratchy from the hospital birth center.

Turns out, labor went really fast and I stripped entirely as I walked into the delivery room. Who knew?!

  • Not shallow at all! I thought about it as well.. but when labor hit (didn't realize it until I was almost 8 cms and then RAN to the hospital), I completely forgot my outfit at home. I could barely stand up, let alone try to find the cute yoga set I had picked out. To top things off, looking back at my delivery pictures, I now realize that I was pretty much naked for the whole thing. I have NO idea when that happened! Lol

Best of luck to you, mama!
