How can I get him to take medicine!?

DS either turns his head, closes his lips, or has even spit it out when I give him medicine. I have tried flavoring it and it doesn't help. I use those syringes they give you, is there something better? Is he old enough for a spoon? Not sure that will help. Any tips?

  • Well, it would be better if he will take it somehow but if won't, then tilt his head back, shoot it in and blow on his nose to make him swallow.

  • ILs bought us that elephant medicine dispenser thing (clicky).  Have you tried one of those?  We've never used it, and so far (knock on wood) DD has always been fine with taking medicine, so I'm hoping we never need to use it.  But a lot of people swear by it.

  • eh sometimes I just get the syringe way back there and just squirt it in his throat and them hand him a sippy

  • Check with your pediatrician about this and the specific medicine, but last time we mixed it with either a small amount of milk and put it in his bottle, or with a Yo Baby Yogurt. It was the only way we could get it in him.

  • It's definitely not fun. I fill the syringe and then sit her in my lap. I lean her back placing my arm across her arms and them wrapping my hand to the other side of her head to keep her tilted and squirt. I make sure to have a nice snack or sippy right after.

  • We give DD large doses of medicine 2x a day and it's not fun most of the time.  We use this (we got it at BRU) - https://www.amazon.com/Safety-Hospitals-Choice-Medicine-Dispenser/dp/B002RJKH4G/ref=pd_sim_sbs_ba_4

If that doesn't work, we need to put it in a syringe and and put it on the side of her cheek, which she hates and is a struggle.

    Good luck!

  • We have tried a spoon and the little plastic measuring cup that comes with childrens  tylenol.  Both are a little messier than the syringe, but we tried making a game out of it and she's taken to the novelty of the spoon/cup.

  • My daughter did that too. I just used the spoon and she took it like a champ!
