Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

wakes EVERY time

I have been transitioned LO to crib for the past two weeks. No matter what, he wakes fairly quick. Can be 45 min, an hour, etc.  I can usually get him back to sleep pretty quickly by rubbing his back. I am just confused as to what is waking him. I am pretty confident most nights he is tired and ready for bed bc he goes down well. We have had a few nights where he lasted 2 hrs. or more but I just don't see an end since I don't know what is causing it. Any idea?

Re: wakes EVERY time

  • Is he crying when he wakes up? I would try to let him get himself back to sleep. If you keep going in he will expect it. I only go in when my kiddo is having hysterics or is truly crying, otherwise he just goes back to sleep himself.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

Last ditch FET resulted in BFP, and identical twin girls!

I agree. He needs to learn how to get back to sleep on his own. He can't rub his own back when he wakes up so he calls out for you. He can cuddle a stuffed animal, though.

  • I agree with PPs about letting him sort it out if he isn't too unhappy when he wakes up.  He's probably just needing some time to get comfortable and used to the new environment.  If you think other noises might be waking him do you have white noise you can use? DD has a lovey that she sleep with and that helps -- we snuggle it when we nurse/feed her and then she goes to bed with it.
  • He is crying when he wakes and usually stands up. We are guilty of not always letting him soothe himself. I really don't believe its a noise waking him up bc he usually has the ac on and a white noise machine. I guess I was just more curious as to what was probably making him wake up every night early in his sleep.

It is okay to respond to your LO when he needs something.  If you don't mind rubbing his back, do it.  He won't want you to before long.

My LO wakes frequently when she's teething and when her belly bothers her (she dairy intollerant).  We always respond to her when she wakes and wants help getting back to sleep and will continue to do so until she doesn't need that anymore.
