House vs. schools?

Would you give up a nicer house/land to be in a better school district?

Dh would like a newer style house built away from the city. Picture the cookie cutter never ending subdivisions...

But the school district I want to be in costs more, so we could only afford a smaller or older house?

Which do you value more?

Re: House vs. schools?

  • School system is number 1 for me. DH and I had this discussion recently as well since we are trying to move by next summer...we are willing to even take a fixer upper house just to get into the very best school system. And seeing that I have worked in schools in the past, I can attest to the fact that there are def differences between great school districts and not so great school districts. The only caveat is that if you were willing or wanted to consider private schools, then maybe you could stick with the great house in the not so great school system...

  • Right now we live in an apartment big apartment in a GREAT school district. We want a house but they are very expensive around here. So we arent in a huge hurry. I'd rather be in a good school district.

  • We just moved but stayed in the same city but we stayed on the same end of the city so that D has better schools. It might be the teacher comingout in me but I am a bit of a school snob. Smile

  • Obviously I think my district is the best in the area, but that being said, we don't live in it. We went for the house with the assumption that I will bring him to my district on the way to work. The elementary school right by the high school I teach at has a foreign language immersion program, which is a must for me. I get first dibs on schools of choice since I'm an employee, but we will have to pay the out of county fee.

  • We def could afford a bigger house if we moved out further from the city, but we like the area. It's a great school district, but we go to catholic school. We just like the area and the town which is this nice because of the great schools.

  • I'd pick school.

We are thinking of building out where we live now, and sending our kids to private school, but I'm still worried about the type of kids that will be our neighbors, it isn't the best community of people.. So.. Ugh.

  • Definitely schools.  And I'd rather live in an older house than a newer cookie-cutter house anyway.

This is me! I'm home right now, but even if I got a position in this district, they aren't allowing employee transfers!

I hope I can bring DH around to my way of thinking!

  • School district wins in my book. But H is probably the opposite...

  • We are currently where we are because of the house. I love love love our home. But our school system in this town is a NO GO for us. We will not enroll our kids here. No question about it! I grew up in one of the best school systems at the time in the country so I want the same for my kids...

We are hoping to take advantage of the "school choice" program where you can live in a different town yet get the school you want elsewhere. You just need to provide transportation.

Schools are moocho important and if we didn't have the option of school choice then we would be moving before kindergarten started.

  • We picked schools and thus our current home is not my dream home.
  • Now I would say school.  When we bought our house 6 years ago it was the furthest thing from our mind.  We are not in a great school district.  We have no plans to move or enroll LO in a private school.  He will go to the local public schools.  As long as he gets a decent education and goes off to either a college, a trade school, or the military I will be happy.

  • School district. Hands down.

I would also put my commute pretty high up there. I would much rather live closer to work with a smaller house, than have a huge house that I am never at because I am stuck in my car.
