April 2012 Moms

Well this was just a matter of time.

My mother called me at 6 am today. My father was being rushed to the hospital. On his way to work today he became dizzy and had a hard time breathing. Two weeks ago he complained of a numb arm but he thought he slept on it funny. I automatically thought heart attack but he was diagnosed with severe scarring in his lungs and his sugar was 298 (fasting). My father smokes 2 packs a day, has never even considered quitting or slowing down. The doctor came in and told him that his life will not be the same when he leaves the hospital. He will need to be on medication and WILL NEED to quit. I don't think he is taking this very seriously. I feel like he thinks that after the treatment he will be able to go home and live a normal life without making any changes. I told him, he and my mother both need to quit. We don't even go into their house since the baby was born because they could be gone for days and the smoke is still in the air. The sugar thing was enevitable as well. He has been eating sweets because it "helps me sleep". We have tried to prick his finger but he is stubborn and gets mean about it. All of his brothers have diabetes. Now after today he had no choice but to face it. He hasn't been to a doctor in 25 yrs because he says, " Going to a doctor they will find something wrong." I can just see how trying to get him to quit smoking and take care of himself is going to turn into a huge fight.

  • I'm sorry, sending t&p's and hoping your parents see this as a turning point.

My parents are the same way with smoking and my dad hasnt gone to the doctor either. It's so frustrating and I pray they will come to their senses.

  • I'm sorry about your dad. I don't think that will make my mom stop, I don't think anything ever will. It makes me sad.

  • I'm sorry about your dad. I don't understand the mentality of not going to the doctor. I hope he can see the light so he cans be there for his grandkids.

  • I am sorry to hear about your dad! My dad is the same way - he hasn't been to a doctor in probably 25 or more years either. He says the same things - he just doesn't want to know somethings wrong with him. He smokes too but he's a closet smoker and doesn't do it very much. But his mom died of lung cancer, and both his parents and nephew have diabetes, so thats very real for him too. I hope your Dad comes to his senses and realizes he needs to make some major changes!!!!!
  • I'm sorry. I hope that he realizes that he needs to make a change ASAP for his health, and then that way you don't have to worry about it turning into an argument.

  • So sorry you are going through this.  I hope he gets the help he needs, and is able to change his ways.  Especially for his grandbaby!
