Hazelnuts in a "peanut free zone"?

DS is in a peanut free preschool. Should I avoid all nuts to be safe or just peanuts? I want to make yogurt parfaits yogurt, blueberries granola, but the granola has hazelnuts. Should I find a nut free granola?

  • I would avoid.  My kids with peanut allergies also have a scattering of tree nut allergies.  Both can be life threatening. But maybe your school's website has clarification of the policy?

  • Thanks for the input! I have no experience with allergies so I'm clueless! There's no website but maybe I'll email the owner/teacher for clarification. Ultimately I'll probably just avoid it anyway!

  • I would probably avoid them all, but you could always clarify with the teacher, just to be sure :)

  • A peanut free school IMHO, is ALL nuts.  Most people that are allergic to nuts are allergic to all of them.  My brother has a nut allergy and is even allergic to coconut.  We didn't know that until a few years ago, when he had an attack from drinking a fruity drink on his honeymoon.

  • The policy at DDs school is no nut- peanut or tree nuts. So I say avoid all.

  • I would probably ask the teacher or just avoid.

Pine nuts in pesto is something I hadn't thought of.  That's a good reminder for me because DS loves pesto.  He's not in a nut free school now, but it will be good to remember once he's in DD's school.  I'll have to find a nut free recipe for him because pesto is a staple in his lunches.

Actually a peanutfree school is just a peanutfree school and a nut free school covers all nuts. And while there are many people that have a lot of allergies peanuts and other nuts are not in the same in the same food group, peanuts are legumes. Coconuts are not a fruit, they are a tree nut like pine nuts, walnuts, etc. There is always the chance of having multiple allergies but as far as I know a person with a peanut allergy is no more likely to be allergic to tree nuts than they are to soy or dairy although some people with very bad peanut allergies are told to avoid tree nuts because of possible crosscontamination at the food processing plant. People with tree nuts are often told to avoid all tree nuts because they are the same food group and have a higher likelihood of allegy to more than one type of tree nut.

That said, other parents will send tree nuts because they are not banned with the peanut ban. It could never hurt to ask the teacher if there are any tree nut allergies because you are being cautious.

  • I would avoid. My son has allergies to nuts and tree nuts. His school is nut free and does not specify which ones. Imagine how horrible you would feel if the food you provided caused someone to have a reaction. There are so many other things you can provide that are nut free. GL

  • I'm paranoid so I'd avoid all nuts.
  • We are asked to avoid all nuts and anything made with nuts which includes a lot of chocolate.  We are not allowed to bring home made snacks to school at all and for snacks that are eaten in the classroom (they do a morning snack and you can buy one off the snack cart that comes around - $65 for the year such a great deal - or bring something from home) it has to be 100% nut free but in the lunchroom, they can eat nuts as they have a nut free zone and they wash up the kids really well afterward especially if the class has a nut allergy in the room (which both of my kids do).  I always play it safe and just don't send nut stuff although that will get harder with my younger DD who loves peanut butter - she gets lunch provided most days in her PreK class but will want to bring lunch next year.
