a little vent from a lurker

my son started walking a few days ago. i was a little worried it was taking so long. i posted a proud video on facebook, and a friend i had in high school commented about how her kids started walking when they were 8 and 9 months old, and she remembers it like it was yesterday. thanks for raining on my parade

  • Unfortunately there are so many "one-uppers" out there, try not to let it bother you- they are the ones that are insecure.  Congrats on your LO walking though!

This exactly. Why do people think it's a competition/race? I promise that your kid isn't better, or you aren't a better parent, just bc your child hit a milestone early.

On the other hand...just because she said that doesn't mean she was trying to one up her. Maybe she was just said it to say she remembers how exciting the time was too. I tend to comment about Callie in similar posts, but never mean it to one up or anything. I don't know how to better explain it, but I think people are too sensitive by others comments sometimes, when it's not intentional to upset them or one up them.

  • Yay for walkers!

DS1 walked at 16mon; DS2 walked at 9 mon.  I can tell you I MUCH, MUCH, MUCH preferred the walking at 16mon, even with the worries of "is something wrong?!" that went along with it.  9mon olds have no business walking...even less common sense and steadiness than the typical age walker at a year. Smile

I feel ya! My daughter took three steps two weeks ago but still isn't fully walking. Everyone and their mother wants to tell me when their kids started walking at nine or ten months and everyone in my husband's family keeps mentioning his cousin whos son recently started walking at eight months. I don't give a crap.

I do that, too. I guess people can take it the wrong way, but I never mean to brag. I made a comment on someone's photo of their child (who looked like he was walking, but apparently was only propped up), and said, "Wow! So great that he's walking! So is my LO!" And she deleted me from FB. Ha. People can very insecure about their kids, and take sh*t waaaaay too personally, imo.

Wow really!? Geez. Maybe she took that as being sarcastic. That's so weird..

  • The other day someone told me that not only was their son walking at 8 months but she had him potty trained by 9 months and I should get dd a potty to start to train her.
According to my parents I was walking at 9 months and looking at the shape I'm in now it means absolutely nothing for later in life lol.

-I hope you're right. I am a little sensitive about it, since my MIL asks if he's walking yet every time we see her.

  • Yeah my guy still isn't walking!!  There have def been people who try to one-up us by making comments about how young their LOs were when they started to walk.  But I'm just so thankful he's getting close I don't care anymore about the comments.  There are also plenty of people who say to let LO walk when he's ready and that he's just taking his time.  Every professional who has assessed him (pedi, pt, social worker, OT) says he's perfectly normal and that he just needs a little extra time due to his size and personality.  On the upside it's made him a very easy kid!!
