Amount for cash wedding gift?

We are going to a wedding this weekend and giving cash for the gift. What is an appropriate amount? $100, $150 ?

We live in MA if that is relevant, and the couple are good friends of ours.

  • Good friends we would give 200. We are in lcol area but have good jobs.

  • We give $50 for so-so friends, and anywhere between $100-$200 for close friends/family depending on how much extra we have. We've been blessed with a couple good inheritances, and in addition to investing it, we like to share it with people we are close with.

  • Good friends - 200.  Random second cousin I have never met and is having a huge wedding that I was invited to but not attending - 50 dollar gift card from their registry.
  • I think it's just whatever you can afford. I've also heard you should "pay for your plate" meaning you give them around what it cost for them to invite you. In NYC I tend to give alot because I know how expensive weddings are.

ETA I think the average we give people is 300

  • I live in Georgia and around here it seems the norm is around $50. I could never imagine giving someone $200 for a wedding gift. We only got large amounts from our grandparents.
  • I live in NH and around here it's 50 for so-so friends and 100 for good friends.

  • I am learning that I am a cheapskate.

I give from 50-100, usually in the form of tupperware off the registry.

  • All I want to say is that I wished I had all of you ladies as friends!! I normally spend about $50 to $75 on a gift and I thought that was good. I had several friends that came to our wedding and we didn't get a gift, we didn't even get gifts from DH's brothers who were both groomsmen. I didn't send thank you cards to people that gave no gifts, I felt bad, but I didn't know what to say in them. Also, my BIL's didn't even rent their own tuxes, we had to pay for them too.

  • We got married the first out of our friends so we just give people exactly what they gave us. Unfortunately, that's usually $300 or more!

  • If I'm buying a gift from a registry I usually choose something in the $50-100 range. But they don't have registry and I know they are not doing super great financially. We loved when people gave us cash for our wedding, since we paid for the whole thing ourselves anything to offset that was very welcome!!

I think we'll do $150. Seems like a happy medium.

Thanks for all the perspectives guys!

  • We do 200 to 250 for good friends. And 50 on their shower gift or so. Close family we do 300 to 400. I know that's a lot though.

  • If we sent a gift/went to a bridal shower and brought a gift to that we will do $100-ish. Not that it's tit for tat by any means but most our friends were still in college when we got married and we more or less got handshakes from them and that was that so I have a hard time giving a huge gift. That's really terrible of me but oh well.
