Thanksgiving clicky - "Dressing" vs. "Stuffing"?

The Santa gift clicky below made me think of the other HEATED debate (no lie...it's ridiculous) about Thanksgiving.  I was raised in the south and because the bread mixture isn't "stuffed" in the turkey - we have ALWAYS called it "dressing".  DH insists on calling it stuffing because that's what he was raised on and that's what "everyone calls it".  ha!

  • Dressing goes on salads.

  • I think the term possibly comes from when we used to "dress" the turkey with it....no? I know some people still do that but still. My Mom still stuffs the turkey and we've always called it stuffing however.... They maybe called it dress vs stuff? I don't know! Ha

  • It's dressing! ;D

  • I voted dressing because we don't actually "stuff" it up the turkey.  However, the terms our really interchangeable in our family.
  • I always call it stuffing, but we never stuff it in the turkey. And it's my favorite thanksgiving food :)

  • We call it stuffing. We stuff the bird but we also make some on the side which I guess would technically be dressing.
Eta: all these holiday posts are getting me excited!

  • My husband says dressing and stuffing are not the same. I have no clue if they are or not but he seems to think so. He's a southern boy also and asked me if I was making dressing or stuffing when we did our first turkey.

Is one the cornbread variety and the other not? I think I've heard that...

  • Although we don't actually "stuff" the turkey, we still call it stuffing :-)

I agree with PP that said dressing is for salads. Hehe.

  • I clicked stuffing. But my dad makes what we call egg dressing which can be made in or out of the turkey. Because of concerns of it not cooking all the way in the turkey we cook it out of the turkey. We also make stuffing... Aka stove top stuffing :

  • I was born & raised in the south & we have always called it stuffing. My mom will stuff the turkey & make it on the side. The stuffing in the turkey is make with gizzards (YUCK!) & the one on the side is without.

  • What the Brits put int he turkey is stuffing...the stuff the Amerians make for Thanksgiving is Dressing, it had no resemblance to stuffing.
