Another s/o halloween

How long do you go trick or treating for, and how broad is the area where you go?

When I was a kid, I feel like we were out forever, and I had so much candy when we got home I could barely carry it.  Now that I'm a parent, that seems absurd.  We live in a circle and at least while DD is little, I think a lap around the circle might be the full extent of her trick or treating.  It's probably about 30-40 houses.  Am I a mean mommy for limiting her to that?

  • 30-40 houses sounds like a lot!  Doesn't sound like limiting to me lol.

We did our street, which was 8-10 houses, and then usually drove to another neighborhood and did another two circles, so probably anywhere from 50-60 houses total.  I usually filled 1/2 - 3/4 of a pillowcase.  We were typically limited on time though, because our area had a 2 hour window open for TOTing.  After 8 pm, it was a no-go.

I really hope I can be that mom that lets him go as long as he wants/as long as time limits allow.  It's once a year, ya know?  He doesn't have to go to bed on time, doesn't have to eat a perfect dinner, eats a few pieces while he's TOTing, etc.

I hate giving HS kids candy on halloween.

I totally agree.  I walked with my younger neighbor in high school, and rarely took candy (unless it was a favorite kind Wink ).

Have a party at that age, don't go TOTing.  There was always the jerk who would scare the little kids, and that always ticked me off.

  • I grew up in the middle of nowhere, so my parents had to drive us anywhere we went TOTing, except across the street to my mom's parents' house (and most times we just drove over there since it was dark).  Other than that, we only really went to maybe 10 houses at most.

So there's this boy. He kinda stole my heart. He calls me "Mom"

We only went around to a few streets in our neighborhood. There was never any driving to go to another neighborhood or anything like people do these days. And we didn't trick or treat in HS. I hate giving HS kids candy on halloween.

    All of this!

  • My neighborhood was perfect for trick or treating, about a mile in a perfect oval so you ended right where you started. Maybe about 150 houses including the cul-de-sacs. We had absurd amounts of candy too, would last weeks! And the neighborhood was packed with kids from all over town and you couldn't even leave your door because the flow was so constant.

Today there isn't even a fraction of the amount of kids going around the neighborhood. It is so sad :( I think a lot of parents are into the "mall" thing and what not now for the younger ones. But that same house back in the day that gave our KING SIZE bars still does - we are hitting that one up and I think Owen can go to that door Big Smile
