did your ob support you breastfeeding while pregnant?

My son is 27 months old and we are thinking of ttc again soon, but I am still breastfeeding and do not want to stop.

I am going for a preconception counseling appointment soon and I am scared that the ob will tell me to stop breastfeeding.  I really want to find an ob that will be supportive nd that I can be open with.

Re: did your ob support you breastfeeding while pregnant?

  • Yes, my OB is supportive of me continuing to BF for as long as I wanted, and through pregnancy.  My first appt with this pregnancy though was with a nurse practioner in my OB's office who told me how critical it was that I stop.  Thankfully, I knew better, didn't listen to her, will never see her again, and we are still BFing, planning to tandem feed should my son continue to enjoy nursing as much as he does now.

  • I didn't even think to ask. This pg was a surprise, and DD2 was still bfing when I found out. My first appointment is next Tuesday, and honestly, I won't even mention that she's nursing. I figure the only issue is if I have cramping, but that hasn't been the case.

  • I didn't ask, but I also felt comfortable that I was low-risk for pre-term labor, and DD was almost 2 when I got pregnant again and she was only nursing a couple of times a day.  The best course of action is probably to talk to your OB about it, versus what I did.  :)  If your OB tells you something you don't like, it is totally valid to seek other opinions from other OBs or midwives.

  • My MW was totally fine with it. I did see two OBs for short appointments during my last pregnancy for insurance reasons and neither of them were phased, though a nurse told me I "had" to quit and the doctor would "make" me. He didn't care one bit. Adventures In Tandem Nursing is a great book that thoroughly covers this topic along with all sorts of other tandem nursing topics. You might want to check it out!

In terms of my own story, DS1 self-weaned at 37 weeks into my pregnancy. I had reverted to colustrum some time earlier, but then it disappeared for a couple of weeks before returning in time for our newborn.

  • I originally saw the OB that delivered DD and then switched to a home birth MW. Both were/are fine with it.

Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!

  • I miscarried my second pregnancy while still nursing, and not only was my OB comfortable with me continuing to nurse while we continued TTC, but she made a point to make sure I didn't think there was any possible link between the two. I didn't, but it was still comforting of her to make sure I wasn't worried about it. DD was 15 months at the time.

  • My MW was fine w me BFing while pregnant, but it wouldn't have stopped me from nursing anyway. Ask and see, and then make your decision. You also might have better luck with a MW.

pixel princess, total LOL at the PA telling you she'd get the OB to make you wean!
    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • My OB was fine with it. Our 2nd pregnancy was a (blighted ovum) m/c, & she said it was unrelated to BF. I BFed DS until about 6 or 7 weeks ago during this PG. I had to switch OBs around 27 weeks & every one of them has been fine with continuing to BF. I stopped because I had such a hard time getting enough nutrition BF-ing one, I knew it would be harder to do with tandem nursing.
    DS1- Jan 2011
    DS2- Sept 2012
    M/C- Sept 2011

    2u2!

What's wrong with nursing while you are pregnant? Or I mean, what is considered to be an issue with it?

Some people think (without any support from science) that it can cause preterm labour or that you can't nourish 2 babies at once.

In reality, many studies have shown it's safe. For mom, baby, and fetus.

  • We are not TTC but I know that my OB would not support it for me as I had preterm labor during my first pregnancy. That being said, my OB is very holistic so I don't think she would be opposed to it if my situation was different. The reason they might not support it is that breast feeding is said to cause mild uterine contractions, but as mentioned, there arent supportive studies to link miscarriage to bfing during pregnancy.

  • Yes, my OB fully supported BF'ing while I was pregnant with #2.

I am so glad you explained that. I have actually wondered this for awhile. Thanks tokenhoser :)
