Moms of boys-question

DS was circumcised at birth by OB. He is 5 months now, and it has always looked fine up until a month or so ago. The pedi says that it is a common practice now to leave more skin than they used to due to problems developing later in life. DS's looks like it does have more skin than normal (and DS is a bit chubby, so that can effect its look). I have to pull the skin back to clean around the tip. I was curious if anyone has heard of this. TIA!

Re: Moms of boys-question

  • I have to usually (gently) push on the sides to get it to pop up first but then I have to pull back the skin around the tip to clean it. I don't know what baby penises are supposed to look like so I assumed this is normal. The pedi checked out his goods at his 4 month appointment and said everything looked fine there.

Same here. I think it is normal, but it isn't like ive handled a ton of baby penises to compare to.

  • L's looks the same too. I think they have to leave extra skin so that there's some room/elasticity for it to grow. Otherwise, it would be too tight as it grew and could be painful for them.

  • I'm not sure if this is what you're referring to, but DS has sort of a "retracted" penis...like PP I also have to kind of pop it out to clean around it.  The pedi said that it is not a problem now because DS is extra chubby, so there is all of that baby fat that is preventing it from sticking out.  It's only a problem if it stays that way once they've gotten older and thinned out.  THEN you may need to consult a pediatric urologist.  But most likely, it's the way it is because they and it are so small.
  • Did they recommend you clean the penis like that? S isn't circumsized but we were told not to pull back any skin to clean the tip.

ditto. it was stressed to us to absolutely never pull back the skin. i'm guessing it's different when you're circed?

We have to clean it like that because it's the only way to expose the tip. But yes, it's completely different for babies who aren't circ'd. The skin is still attached on them and it would be very painful if it was pulled back.

  • Ok thanks ladies. I've never seen other baby penises either. I just new it didn't look like an adult penis. That makes sense that they leave more skin for them to grow into. I do have to pop it out to clean it. I was just kind of worried that the OB that did the circ had messed it up and left too much skin. It really wasn't that bad until he became a chunky monkey either. Smile

  • DH always laughs at me because I am constantly  asking about the normalcy of L's penis. He is circumcised. It's not like I have one so I never know what is going on down there. We have to pull the skin back to expose the glans to clean out the smegma, too.
