NBR: Those who have Cigna insurance...

DH and I just got under Cigna because of his job. Do y'all know if they cover breast pumps? I'm looking into it and reading up on it myself, but I figured I'd ask y'all anyway. Also, what other little details do they cover if any? The reason I don't know too much about the insurance is because I was on Medicaid this whole time, DH got a great new job and the Cigna benefits are so much better. He did a lot of research beforehand, but I didn't get a chance to really look up the small things. Thanks in advance!

  • Every policy will be different. Breast feeding supplies will be covered, but Cigna can decide which ones they will cover. The only way you will know is if you call and ask.

  • We have Cigna. Unfortunately, we have cigna through my husband's job and they have us on the worst plan ever. I wish I wouldn't have been so dumb in the beginning and figured all of this stuff out beforehand. Anyways, our Cigna plan will cover 75% of a medical grade breastpump. We are still responsible for the other 25%. Now, from my understanding it is only medical grade that they cover and they kept talking about the Medela medical grade, so I'm not sure if that's the only one or not. But, that pump is over 1,000 dollars! So even at 25%, it doesn't help that much. We would still be paying just the same for a double electric medela that isn't as big and bulky as the medical grade. However, the medical grade one is aaaawwweeesome.

  • We have Cigna. Have you tried going to cigna.com and looking up what is covered? You can also create an account and keep track of your deductibles, explanation of benefits, and all that.

    Okay, Got it.

Cigna covers a manual or standard electric breast pump as medically necessary for the initiation or continuation of breastfeeding.

Cigna covers rental of a heavy duty electrical/hospital grade breast pump as medically necessary for the initiation or continuation of breastfeeding for EITHER of the following indications:

? Direct breastfeeding is not possible because of a separation due to the prolonged or repeat hospitalization of either the infant or the mother.

? The infant has a medical condition or congenital anomaly that prevents effective breastfeeding.

So what they are saying is yes, in general cigna does cover a standard electric pump (the ones you'd buy at target/walmart) and there is no precert required for it, so you could just submit your claim.

the hospital grade rentals need a medical nessisity review and you have to meet the critera for it.

I personally recomend CALLING. Every plan is differnt and if your employeer opted out of covering those, theres nothing that can be done. The actual amount thats covered does depend on what type of plan that you have.

Atleast that gives you a guideline to go by, hope it helps!

I'm curious. Unless you know which exact plan out of CIGNA's plethora of offered plans she has - how can you possibly tell her if it is covered? If we are talking about coverage due to health care reform - you don't even know when her plan renews. Unless, for some reason CIGNA made a decision to cover breast pumps across the board for every plan no matter the renewal date - but I highly doubt that.

OP - you need to get the plan document or SPD for your specific plan option - or call CIGNA and give them your information so they can look it up. Even if someone else here has CIGNA (or works there) there is no way they can tell you if it is covered under your specific plan. I personally would just call the customer service number on your ID card.

  • Most plans are standard and unless your employer opts out, I can tell if its something thats covered by cigna as whole unless its a crazy specific plan. I was giving a general gist. My bad for trying to help .... Yes

  • All POLICIES are different. Doesn't really matter who the insurnace company is. My husband's work has them on Cigna, and they have the worst health insurance plan I have ever seen. I am sure Cigna offers great ones too, but it just depends on the employers choice of policies they offer their employees. I tried "figuring it out myself" on my policy (thorough a different comapny) and you really can't tell unless you call and ask. If it is covered, it would be under whatever your Durable Medical Equipment benefit is most likely. Good Luck!

  • We have Cigna through my husbands work and they actually have a very good policy but I called and asked about a breastpump myself and they said the only way it is covered is if the mother and baby have to be seperated for medical reasons. Like if the baby is PT and the mom gets discharged before the baby.
