S/o the great shopping cart debate

This is a pic of the shopping carts at my grocer (sorry, not clicky)

https://www.flickr.com/photos/thetransitcamera/4867210203/

With the front grill folded down, the top section is nearly as deep and certainly as big as the bottom.  I actually find it more difficult to store the carrier in the bottom because the top section gets in the way a bit, though it's not impossible.

Legitimate question: given the design of this cart, is there still a good reason to put lo in the bottom?  I'll also say that "toppling carts" and "changing the centre of gravity"  don't seem like real possibilities.

You might change my mind about this.

  • I just want to throw in the unasked for opinion that I don't understand using a car seat at all while shopping. It seems like such a PITA! Lugging it in, either potentially being unsafe on the top part (and impeding view), or taking up all the space in the main basket. Plus I would be worried stepping away from my cart at all. Baby wearing is the only way to shop! Sooooo easy.

For me, my DS hates baby wearing. So that doesn't work for us. :-

When I was on mat leave and therefore, took Adeline shopping with me, I always wore her.  Well, a few times I took her in the seat in the cart because she was asleep, but she'd wake up screaming.  Whereas, if I'dj ust put her in the Beco to start, she would've fallen back asleep.  Bleh.

I want to babywear so bad! I did put Lou on top of the shopping cart once. I never did it again, because it did feel unsafe when i was doing it. This was the first time i went to the store by myself, and the seat was sliding around. I had my hand on it the whole time. So now, i just shop with my stroller, and can only pick up a few things. It blows.

But Do-Jo, i don't know, that cart looks tricky to me, and if you are going to put the seat in the cart, i would use the top so you could keep your hand on the seat.

That's a bummer. Now, I am the furthest thing from attachment parenting, and am not a baby wearing pusher, but if you DO want to do it (which I recommend purely for Mother's convenience sake - it can be a lifesaver!) I definitely recommend trying a bunch of carriers. With DS1 I had to cycle through the Hotsling, Moby, and Ergo (haaaaaaated them) before we discovered his obsessive love of the Bjorn. So, dont give up! (only if you want to, lol)

When I wear him, I can't bend low and get the larger items I need like bulk cat food, litter, flour etc. I obviously don't need those each week, so DH and I could potentially work something out though.

  • I personally would not put a carseat anywhere in that cart, the sides do not appear to be high enough.

I would either:  babywear, use a stroller and the basket for my groceries, or leave LO at home with DH.  I usually babywear grocery shopping.

  • I think you have to judge for yourself if it is safe or not.  My H puts P in the baskets at Sunflower which are simular. I carry her in a pack.

  • As a person who has witnessed a cart flip over and land on a baby that had to then be rushed to the hospital by paramedics... I would NEVER EVER EVER put my baby in the top of the cart.... I cant even touch the FFC post Im sorry.. I dont consider myself a peqrl clutcher... but in this one instance.. having seen it myself I think I am scarred for life.. I always put him in the BIG OPEN basket if anything at all.. otherwise its the stroller or carrying him myself... With your example.. I'd use my stroller... sorry!

  • I just wear him. It's just much easier. For the first few months, when he slept all of the time, I used the stroller ( he  doesn't sleep when I baby wear) or went to the grocery on days DH had off. My infant seat doesn't fit on the cart. Even if it did, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it.

  • So, what would you guys do if your baby tries to fling himself out of his k'tan to get to the stuff on the shelves? That is my situation.

*I CANT put baby in his seat on the top of the cart, the seat is designed not to do it*

  • Well I don't have a good scientific explanation for why you shouldn't do it.  I would imagine though that every parent who has had a child fall and end up with a serious injury didn't think it could happen and what they were doing was safe.  I just don't see any reason to do it since there are other options like wearing baby or putting the seat in the main basket.
