How often do you give solids?

Only at dinner time? After every "major" meal time? As in breakfast, lunch, and dinner?  Some other combo? LMK

Re: How often do you give solids?

  • I do just once in the afternoon.

  • We haven't developed a good routine since his nap schedule varies so much. I want to always include him in dinner, which means always having dinner ready by 6pm or so, which I'm sure will happen someday, lol. He eats breakfast with us more often than not, but hardly ever eats lunch.

  • We just had our 4 month appointment with her doctor (at almost 5 months). He was worried that since her 2 month check up ahe hasn't gained very much (not even a full pound). She is happy and sleeps well and wont take a bottle so he wants me to feed her solids 3 times a day. Cereal in the morning and veggies for lunch and dinner.

I ebf and don't want to replace those feedings with solids so when she wakes up in the morning around 7 I bf her.  An hour later I give her cereal. Then she plays for a bit and then had a nap. I do the same for lunch and dinner.

I don't think most people start doing it 3 times a day though. With our older two it was cereal in the morning only, for a week. Then twice a day for a week. Then we did three times a day.

  • In the morning I give him some rice cereal it's only like a couple tea spoons..then a bottle right after.. Then at night I give him a vegetable and a bottle after. I don't give him much because I'm not trying to substitute it for a bottle...he loves his carrots and I love feeding them to him.

Right now we are just giving something at 6ish when we eat dinner. But I've been considering this and wasn't sure if anyone else was doing it! Thanks!

  • In the morning he typically has a veggie.. and then in the evening he has a fruit :)

  • Once a day, different times depending on how busy we are that day. It usually ends up being dinner time while we eat, but sometimes lunch. Rarely at breakfast time.

  • We just started doing food. Right now we're only giving it to her once between our lunch and dinner - like 4ish. We'll probably step it up to twice a day in a couple of weeks.

  • When we were doing cereal, I was doing it once a day, usually in the morning or afternoon. Now that we are doing 'real' food, I was doing cereal in the morning, then veggies late afternoon. Today I skipped the cereal altogether because he doesn't like it anyway. I'll probably just do veggies once a day still for now though.
  • Haven't started with DD2.

With DD1, I would give her solids only in the morning, I figured it she had a reaction to something I'd have all day to deal with it instead of giving them at night and then having to deal with that right before/at bedtime. At around 8 months I started doing meals at breakfast and dinner, and by 10 months we were doing 3 meals a day.

  • Just for breakfast. It's a lot more convenient for me at that time (more milk to mix in) and I read that solids have little impact on sleep anyway. He's really fussy at night too so the solids are more well received (eta: better received in the morning when he isn't fussy)

  • I have zero time in the morning to BF and then give solids. She has some oatmeal after her noonish bottle at daycare. Then she has some oatmeal at home around 7ish after we eat. It's working well right now. I think we may be stepping up to some veggies this weekend
