Official intro

Hi ladies!

I have been lurking for so long, that I thought I would officially introduce myself.  My name is Shayna, and I have a 3 year old son who has been unofficially diagnosed with asd.   He was born at 33 weeks weighing 4lbs.  After spending 5 weeks in the nicu, due to not developing the suck, swallow, breathe reflex, he finally came home.  Luckily he never had breathing difficulties but I would say he would 8 weeks old before he could take a bottle.  Looking back, I believe that's when the sensory issues began.

I thought once we were released from the nicu, that all of our problems would be behind us, but as the months passed he became more and more developmentally delayed.  We were seriously concerned by his 9 month check-up, because he couldn't sit up unassisted, crawl, and he would gag and cry even eating puffs.   We got the referral for EI, and that started when he was right at 12 months.

We started with PT and OT each once a week.  It wasn't dramatic but he did learn to crawl and started walking by 20 months.  When he was 2, we started speech and while he has made improvements with that,  he is now working with a speech pathologist at the preschool through the school system.  He still has sensory issues, but we're dealing with those.  They're not directly related to eating anymore.   In June, we phased out of EI and this past August he started preschool.  He loves riding the bus, and talks about it almost every day.

Some of his favorites things now involve, opening and closing doors, he loves fans of all kinds, and lights.  He is an incredibly bright child, and I have no doubts he will be successful in whatever he chooses to pursue.

Anyway, that's our story.  I look forward to getting to know you ladies.  Feel free to ask me any questions :)

Re: Official intro

  • Welcome! Sounds like you have a good plan in place. My 4 yo DS is pdd-nos and also has/had a love of lights, fans, and opening and closing doors!! Even as an infant the fastest way to get him to nap was to put him on a bed under a ceiling fan. I actually switched his nursery to another room in our house so that he'd have a ceiling fan. His interest in them has waned, fortunately. And while I detested putting my toddler on a school bus for EI, he also loved it.

  • Welcome!

I read your post and think to myself - yep there's nothing like lights and doors and riding the bus.

    Happy Friday
