Hydration belt vs handheld

I am starting to get into running more and up until recently all of my running has been with the jogging stroller.  Now I am actually going out running by myself every now and then!!  I don't run too far - not more than 5 miles, but I get thirsty and really struggle if I don't bring water with me.  I also like to use my iPod so if I have a water bottle and the iPod it makes it really difficult to have both.

I am debating between the Nathan 2 bottle water belt and a hand held.  Pros - cons?   Also, with the water belt do you wear it more on your waist or hips?  I keep going back and forth between the two and can't decide.  Thanks!

Re: Hydration belt vs handheld

  • I prefer a water belt to the handhelds. I don't like to have something in my hand while running, drives me nuts. Plus, for the water belts you can usually get an extra little pack that attaches to carry other items such as keys. You can always buy it at a place that allows returns and try it out first.

  • I have both- I use my handheld for shorter runs (up to 10 miles). When I train for a marathon, I use the belt. I can't imagine carrying something for 4+ hours. I am pregnant right now, so my belt is super uncomfortable. I wear it slightly below my real waist. I used to wear a Nathan belt with two 8 or 10 oz flasks, but it really pinched my hips. So I switched to a Camelbak belt with one large bottle (I think it's 24 oz) and it works *much* better for me. It's such a personal preference and really the only way to know what works best for you is to try it! (And walking around the store is just not the same as running a few miles with it). Make sure you look at Amazon- I always find they have the best prices. Good luck and happy running!!

  • I hate running with something in my hand so I have the hydaration belt with 4 small bottles on it. I love it.

  • Ditto the hate for running with things in your hands. I have the Nathan single bottle waist pack and I love it. No bouncing, no riding up - just perfect.

I don't use it for races, only training runs.
