Did anyone decline quad testing?

I know quad testings/triple marker testing is generally optional for most people and at my last appointment my SO and I declined to have the test done because we don't have any predominate health/genetic factors that would cause an abnormality in the baby, and we would keep the baby even if there was a chromosomal disorder. Did any of you decline testing?

Re: Did anyone decline quad testing?

  • I didn't decline it, and my doctor's office suggested we do it, even though my NT results were perfect. It wasn't a big deal, just a blood test. I figured I'd want to know if something was wrong or if there was a possibility of something being wrong just so we could prepare for it.

  • I feel the same way you do!  We declined it yesterday.  My doctor said no worries you aren't the first and you won't be the last.  He said the only reason he would push for it was if we had a family history.

  • I declined. I always do.

  • I think I mentioned this in another thread, but my husband and I decided to have it done because even though the doctor said we're low-risk for any of those problems, we'd rather know ahead of time if there is an issue so we can be prepared if there is some sort of problem, especially if there is anything we can do ahead of time to make things easier, both for us and the baby.

  • We also declined.

  • I've declined all optional testing so far.  There are a lot of reasons why the testing is good, but reasons why it allows for more worry than necessary.  For example, I just declined the Spina Bifida blood testing last night because it can pick up all levels of spina bifida, but would require additional scans to try to find the severity.  Any major spina bifida issues would be picked up on our A/S, so I'll just wait until then.

  • I think it is such a personal decision. There is no right or wrong here. I choose not to because it wouldn't change much for us. I would end up worrying the whole pregnancy if something came back and there are so many false positives and negatives with it.

I see why people want to know so that they are prepared emotionally and with the right teams in place. I feel that I don't need that time to prepare and we are super close to all the right hospitals and people.

  • I totally understand preparing and if taking the test helps you to prepare by all means... but if you can prepare yourself without testing/knowing then I say it's okay not to test.

The only problem is if you are not prepared emotionally, medically, intellectually, for emergencies etc.

Nothing can prepare a parent for a child that has a small chance of survival outside of the womb whether you know what the testing says or not. (Some babies born with Downs will have dangerous heart problems.)

The choice to test or not to test for anything your baby is not at risk for is such a personal decision. There is no right answer.

We discussed it with our midwives and they "are okay with" anyone not at risk passing up a test. We passed up genetic testing knowing that we are "not at risk" but also knowing that some people who are "not at risk" still have a chance of genetic abnormalities.

  • We declined all extra scans/tests.

  • We declined.  Our OB totally supported the decision.

  • We declined, but not because I am anti-testing... I had genetic testing done before TTC and we had an NT scan, etc.  We declined because my MW said that the false positive rate with the quad scan is much higher than for the anatomy scan and the timing just worked out that we would have results at pretty much the same time... so we just decided to do the a/s on schedule and skip the quad.  If the a/s shows anything problematic, I will have an amnio if it is recommended by the doctor.
  • I declined it.  Two different times.  They asked me at two different appointments to make sure we were sure.
  • We don't do any testing.

  • It's not standard in the country where I live, so I didn't decline it but am not having it done.

  • I declined just this morning. I figured it would not make any difference, so why do it.

  • We have had ZERO testing done. I got the requisitions to get the blood work, but it was up to us. I live in New Brunswick Canada, and we also don't to NT scans here. The only tests I will have done are the anatomy scan at 19 weeks and glucose tolerance testing at 26 weeks (I think).

  • I have so far declined most things- at almost 16 weeks, all I've had done is a prenatal blood panel and UA done. I don't plan on any sonograms, unless my midwife feels there is a need for one (she usually doesn't).  I'm not even sure if I'll do a glucose tolerance test- and if I do, she said I could just eat a candy bar and then she'd check me. If I'm still high after being tested, we're going to work on nutrition before starting any drugs.

I have LOVED her approach to my pregnancy so far- her laid back attitude has kept me so at ease. I'm not stressing about things like I would have, had I decided to have every possible test conducted.  For our family, terminating a pregnancy isn't an option, so even if we found something that warranted further investigation, it wouldn't change much- just get us on the radar for early intervention/specialists/etc.

Don't stress about it- do what is right for your family, and don't worry about popular opinion. :)

  • I declined it in my first pregnancy. I thought I will have this baby no matter what and that was true and is true for this pregnancy, too. However, at my anatomy scan at around 22 weeks they found cysts in DS's brain which are a soft marker for Down's Syndrome. We immediately opted to get tested for some peace of mind. Long story short, the cysts dissolved and I we have a healthy baby boy. But that scared me enough to not decline it this time. It came back very well, with numbers smaller than 1/10,000 and I think if this baby shows cysts again I would handle it much better than in my first pregnancy.
  • I decided not to do it. There really aren't any predominant genetic abnormalities within either of our families, so we just didn't see the need.
