Picky eater

My almost four year old completely refuses fruits and veggies...we've tried every trick in the book but he just won't eat them. All he likes it junk....chicken nuggests, pizza, fries.....so I'ce started giving him carnation instant breakfast to give him some vitamins....anyone else?

Re: Picky eater

  • We have been going through this, it's especially bad when he's with us and not around his friends. When around his friends he'll eat whatever they are eating including veggies.

So we dole the food out, we cut up nuggets and fries and for every bite of veggie he eats he gets one bite of nugget or fry. We've been doing this for a few weeks and we are finding that we are doing less doling out now and he's doing it more on his own.

  • 4 year olds are so picky - even my amazing eater went through this phase at 4 and I am happy to report at 6, she is back to being my amazing eater.  My 4 1/2 year old is also picky and we have a rule that you have to at least eat one of everything on the table (unless its something we know they have tried a trillion times and truely does not like) so if we serve carrots, she has to eat one tiny carrot.  We don't make separate meals and the girls have to eat a decent amount of what is served before they can get anything else (they can have yogurt, fruit, cheese for example) but if they just picked at the meal, they can't have anything else - we tell them how much needs to be eaten if they ask for something else.  We typically make sure they have had at least half of what was given and try to encourage sticking with just the meal we made as much as possible.  We do give the a multi vit a day and feel they eat well balanced diet for the most part so don't supplement with anything else but I don't see it as an issue if your child is really not enough of the good stuff.  I would limit the treat stuff though as well (which you may be doing already).

  • If DD doesn't finish her meal she's excused from the table with the rule that if she wants anything else for the rest of the night besides water she has to come back and finish her plate first.  It works every time.  I find that most of the time she just isn't hungry enough right away at dinner time.  I've also been holding off on giving her a drink until about mid-way through her meal.  She'd gulp it down first and then fill up faster.
  • We're opposite here. Ryan loves fruits and veggies but will NOT eat meat. He will occassionaly eat bread. We bribe him with chocolate milk which works about 50% of the time. I bribe him with cartoons to get him to eat scrambled eggs.

We just keep offering him what we eat for dinner in hopes that he'll eventually say yes. Our pedi isn't concerned and we give him a multi vitamin.
