stupid baby clothes question

I know this is probably asked quite a bit on some of the other boards, but I need help figuring out how many nb/0-3m clothes to get and what kind.

DS was 9.5lbs and never fit in nb size and was only in 0-3 for about a month. My OB thinks that the new baby will be much smaller, she was in the 40th percentile at our last u/s and she said girls tend to be smaller. We'll see, but I want to be somewhat prepared.

Right now I have 5 white onesies (0-3) , 5 white onesies (3-6) , 3 short sleeve onesies (0-3) , 2 long sleeve onesies (0-3) , 1 dress (nb) ,  1 long sleeve romper (0-3)

We are set on sleepers/nightgowns from DS .. and somehow have no pants.

Thank you for any help. I plan on hitting up some consignment stores this weekend.

Re: stupid baby clothes question

  • Eh, I wouldn't buy into size estimates, especially this early on. My big baby measured small on ultrasounds and my small baby measured big.

I would stick to 0-3 stuff and skip newborn. I'd probably get some more rompers (maybe 6 or so) since those are easy for the early days at home, and get more stuff as you see how big she is when she's born/how quickly she grows. If you happen to have a tiny baby, you could always go out and get a few things in the first few weeks and likely visitors will bring clothes.

  • That's why I haven't really gotten any NB yet, DS was supposed to be "about 7lbs" and was nowhere close to that.

I just feel like I've completely forgotten what he was like as a baby and what he wore all the time. I know with his reflux he went through more than one outfit a day. He was also a summer baby and this one will be born in Jan.

  • My DS was 9.9lbs and I had a DD second and she came out at 9.2lbs. DS actually fit into SOME of his newborn stuff. I found boys newborn to run a lot bigger than girls. DD was smaller than DS, but fit into none of her newborn stuff. The size we used most was 3 months. I would try to get as much as you can in 0-3 and 3 months. Chances are you'll have another biggish baby! Good luck!

oh yeah, and you'll probably get tons of gifts. We got a million newborn outfits when she was born and she couldn't wear a one. If your baby does end up on the smaller size, I'm sure you'll get plenty for her to wear.

  • My middle daughter was born in Dec.  She lived in Sleep N Plays for the first 3-4 months.  I would dress her girly when we went out of the house 1-2 days a week.  I loved the sleep n plays since I never had to worry about losing a sock!!
  • Yep, skip NB sizes. My older son was 8 lbs 4 oz, and was fine in 03. You can always have someone run out and get them if she is a peanut.

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • I also wouldn't put much stock into the measurements right now, even two days before I delivered they said my babies were 6.12lbs and 6.15lbs.  They were 5.7lbs and 5.9lbs. I think most newborns (mine were preemies) don't wear much newborn before going to 0-3, but with her being born in the winter those clothes tend to be more obnoixious if they are too big.  I would stick with some newborn onesies and pants, like the Carters sets?  And then do more 0-3.  With it being flu season do you think you are going to be going out quite a bit?  If so or if you live in an area where that's not a big deal, then I would get some more cuter stuff in newborn sizes/0-3 but if not then I would just stick with simple stuff for that size.
