DS doesn't nap at day care

DS started day care this week and we're running into a problem with his naps: namely, he's apparently not really napping at DC. Our DCP said that today he slept only twice for about 15 minutes each time. When he's at home with me, he sleeps after 2 hours of awake time, for 30 minutes each time. This adds up to 2-2.5 hours of nap time each day. So I'm concerned that he's getting only half an hour of sleep at DC. :(

We're trying to troubleshoot with our DCP to figure out what's going on. I suspect it's that he sleeps in a swing at home but she says it's illegal for her to do that so she puts him in a bassinet. I'd guess that that, plus the new environment, are probably the main issues.

In the meantime, has anybody else faced a napping problem at day care? Do you have any suggestions for what we might try? Will this get better without 'intervention' of some kind, or do we need to (maybe) sleep train him at home so that he'll learn how to nap in a bassinet/PNP? Or something else?

Thanks so much!!

  • That's hard! I wish I had advice but we are dealing with the same. They struggle to get and keep her asleep. She's not a great napper at home either but the two 15-30 minute naps there are terrible. She gets so overtired and ends up crying a lot :( I'm hoping she will get used to sleeping there soon. We are considering sleep training at home. Hopefully it helps us and maybe she will do better at daycare too.
If your lo wakes after a short nap do they try to resettle at all? I have asked ours to try because she certainly isn't waking rested after 15 minutes. I hope things get better soon for your ds!

  • L is not a good napper at home and is the same in DC. At home we hold her when she naps. Dc puts her in the crib, she naps anywhere from 20-50 min at a time for them. Today she was up at 7am and she didn't take her first nap until 11am! That's crazy and I can only imagine how cranky she was.

I don't have a lot of experience but from what I am told LOs sleep and eat differently in DC. Or at least some do. There's a lot going on in the rooms, different noises, lighting, all that. Give it some time or talk to the DCP.

I can say this, when L gets home from DC she is exhausted. Tonight she slept from 6:25-8:15. Then we bathed her, bottle and right back to sleep. If her naps are bad are worse than normal at DC then she takes a longer evening nap.

  • I'm in the same boat as you. I am hoping since it was her first week that she will adjust. I'm also hoping to get her out of the swing at home. Good luck!

  • I'm having the same problem too. She took two half hour naps at dc and is also giving them a problem with eating. She's only at dc 2 days a week so I'm really going to work on napping in her crib when she's home. My dcp told me they could let her sleep for 20 minutes in the swing before they had to move her to a crib. Not sure if it's the same for yours but maybe that might help?

  • My LO sleeps about half an hour total on a typical day in DC, and he's been going for almost a month. Honestly, he doesn't seem any fussier than usual, just more tired in the evening, so it doesn't bother me that much.  They say he is pretty happy there all day.  DC says it's very normal for babies to not nap well for a while due to the environment.  He's always been a terrible napper and the main way I get him to nap on the weekends is by nursing him to sleep or wearing him, so I'm not surprised he's having issues. We're also knee-deep in 4 month wakeful right now, which doesn't help.

Usually he will take a nap on me soon after he gets home, and I've been putting him down for bed a little earlier to let him get more sleep at night and getting him up as late as possible in the morning.  That seems to help.

  • It took a few weeks for our girls to start napping at daycare. It's still not as good as at home, but they're working on it and getting better.

  • Well thank you all for the input! It's good to know I'm not alone in this. The bummer is that apparently he's been crying/fussy quite a bit, which has to be due at least in part to being overtired. I'm sure the transition overall is a little tough on him too -- going from home alone with me to being with 9 older kids and three strange adults all day. Poor little man. :(

I'll talk more with our DCP to see what else she might try (20 mins in swing, for example - I got the impression that she started him there and tried to move him as soon as he fell asleep, which I'm sure woke him up).

Our situation is complicated by a language barrier - English is her second language and we don't speak Spanish. So I suspect it will take some extra effort to be sure we're communicating well with each other while we try to help little Gus get more sleep during the day.

    Thanks!

This is us!!  We are one week into daycare & no meaningful nap.  Falls asleep in the stroller or eating but will wake when put into the crib.  But DCP says you'd never know; he's not cranky and happy all day.  I guess we'll give it time & see how it goes.  I'm very anti-sleep training and CIO so I hope this will resolve on its own.

Blessed to be married to my best friend & so in love with our little man!!

  • DS did not nap well at DC in the beginning, but he has gotten much better. There are still days where he only takes catnaps there. But there have been a few days where he's slept for 3-4hrs too. Most days, he'll take 2 cat naps and 1 longer 2-3hr nap.
