Solids question for breastfeeding mamas

We are going to start giving Max some sweet potato this wk. He is obsessed w our food and dives for it + has all the other ready signs. He loved oatmeal w bmilk. I am nursing to completion and then going to offer the solids. I put a little filtered water into the sweet potato puree to make it puree-able, but my question is - do I have to add bm to the puree or will it be ok w/o it?

  • you can add water or bm- obviously the bm has more nutritional value- just depends on your available stash, preference, etc

Oh ok, cool. I guess I am wondering if BM needs to be there for digestibility? Everything I read says that sweet potatoes are pretty easy to digest.

  • Most "start" fruits/veggies don't have digestive issues. But Rice cereals can cause constipation- as well as bananas.

A few things to keep in mind when starting foods:

~initial feedings are more about a positive "experience" and exposure to actually eating- not so much about consuming. Although, if LO likes it and eats, it BONUS! :)

~keep the consistency a bit runny- so it can run off the spoon

~try only one food every few days to monitor for  any allergic reactions

~ keep an eye on diapers. "What goes in must come out." And if it's not, go back to BFing until you get a bowl movement. LOs system needs time to adjust to food. ***A constipated baby is NOT a happy baby.***

Happy Feeding! Take lots of pictures! :)

  • With olDer DD I added a bit of water if needed but did not mix veggies or fruit with BM. I wanted her to taste the natural favors of the food w/out everything tasting like BM.
